Congratulations to all the Newman Mathematics students in years 4, 5 and 6 who participated in APSMO Maths Olympiads & Maths Games. The competition is designed for students in years 4, 5 and 6 of primary schools and years 7 and 8 of secondary schools. Each year the students compete against teams from around Australia and New Zealand. This year due to COVID restrictions it became an intra-school competition.
Each competition comprised 5 questions and had to be completed in a specified time frame of around 20-30 minutes. The main aims of the competitions are to: introduce students to important mathematical concepts; teach major strategies and develop flexibility for problem solving; foster ingenuity and strengthen intuition; stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment of mathematics and provide for the satisfaction, joy and thrill of meeting challenges.
The students found the experience rewarding and were able to see an improvement in both their creative problem solving skills and confidence over the course of the year.
All the students who participated in the competition received a Certificate of Achievement and five students in each year were awarded an Intra-School Special Achievement Award for their achievement and effort.
