Pastoral Care Worker News

There has been a lot said about praise in the last few years. Research has found that too much praise is unhealthy, as when it is not given, it causes anxiety. A vague, “Good boy/girl” comment, or “I like your painting” does little to tell the child anything. If we only praise a child for the finished product, rather than the effort produced, this can also cause confusion.

I am a bit old school. I think praising a child for effort, for WHO they are and for the finished product are all good. Certainly better than putting a child ‘down’, or name -calling.

Try and find some opportunities this week to catch your child out for positive behaviour or work well done. This is called Positive Re-inforcement in the Psychology world, and it works wonders with a child’s behaviour (better than always pointing out the negatives).
