The Hero’s Journey

This term the students in M43 have been focussing on narrative writing. We have explored the concept of ‘The hero’s journey’. This is a common story structure that we often see in many movies and books. These stories seem to follow a similar pattern where the hero gets called to an adventure, enters an unfamiliar setting, and encounters many challenges before facing a final test. After this adventure, the hero returned home as a changed person.

Below are a selection of first paragraphs written by students which shows the hero at home prior to their adventure:

“BANG! BANG! BANG! As Zach walked onto the bright yellow school bus. Zach was a very nice 12-year-old with long brown hair swept to the side also he was in year 7. He sat down on a dark grey soft and comfy seat as he looked out the foggy window. He contently tapped his foot on the black school bus floor. He was close to his high school as he touched the cold foggy window “Oh that’s cold”. He heard little kids screaming. Zach hopped off the school bus and he heard people stepping on the hard-crunchy leaves…” Hudson

“Creak, creak, creak. Maddy opens her door to take her leave on a gorgeous day just to go on a trip to collect some nice, delicate flowers. Before she leaves she looks through the window and saw the reflection of herself. Curly brown short hair, clear white glasses, wearing her skinny jeans, her long sleeve smooth shirt and her black comfortable jacket! She has much curiosity.” Isabella

“One beautiful bright burning day at the beach. Beau was playing volley-ball with music blasting. The ball hit the soft sand with a crunch spraying sand everywhere. Then Beau went for a swim in his deep black shorts they didn’t fit anymore because he had gotten taller so he used a mates shorts. Beau ran into the water with a splash and water rushed against him and it felt like a belly flop.” Beau

“Creak! When the door opened Riley stomped in the small little cottage.
“Mum I’m home.” Riley said.
Riley looked in the mirror staring at her short blond hair and her cool blue eyes. Now that she’s 13 she loves animals she also has a dog named Bobby he barked 24/7. She loves living in her blue little cottage with her bright red door.” Mannat

“Snap, Snap, snap, was the sound of Sonics footsteps as he ran peacefully through the woods near his little wooden log house. As Sonic was running he noticed the massive long trees with leaves light as fresh grass and a really wobbly path way. He was following the sound of beautiful birds chirping. After Sonic passed a long lake he saw his dark red eyes, black nose and his peach stomach as well Sonic saw he was a yellow hedgehog. Sonic then saw a little lost cuddly bunny so he helped the bunny home and…The bunny snuggled with him as long as it could and Sonic felt warm in the inside.” Theo
