News from the Art Room

Foundation/1

This term the Foundation/Grade 1’s have been learning about clay. Students have had the opportunity to play with clay and explore various properties of this medium. They have learnt how to use forms typically used by ceramic artists; these include, a ball/sphere, a pancake/slab and a worm/coil. Students were actively involved in making patterned pinch pots, birds and an initial wall hanging, using all known forms.

Grade 2/3

Students in Grade 2/3 have been learning all about texture this term. They were given the opportunity to create rubbings using rubbing plates and other highly textured surfaces in the art room. With these rubbings, students made simple collages using known shapes. Then they created rubbing monsters using different shapes and colours. This week they have been extending themselves by creating their own textured apple drawings.

Grade 4-6

This term, Grade 4-6 have been exploring how light is used in art. Students examined how a light source passes through transparent 3D forms. They created photographs that demonstrated how light makes shadows and reflections. Following on from this, they looked at the artwork of Vincent Bal and created simple shadow drawings. This week they explored different acrylic paint techniques in preparation for their ‘chiaroscuro’ inspired painting, which will also include the use of a LED light source.
