Religious Education

All students attending St Louis de Montfort's Aspendale have the right to feel safe. The care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people is a fundamental responsibility of all within our school.                                                                                     Marylene Douglas

On Wednesday evening our parish was invited to attend an on-line  presentation by Sherry Balcombe, the manager of the Australian Aboriginal Catholic Ministry. In this presentation she gave us a brief overview of her rich  Aboriginal culture and Spirituality and how it relates to today's world.  She also explored the 9 Principals of Religion and how these 9 principals of:

  • Belief,
  • Myths/stories,
  • Sacred Texts,
  • Rituals,
  • Symbols,
  • Social Structures,
  • Ethical Principals
  • Religious Experience and Spirituality
  • Time and Space                                             are connected to aboriginal spirituality.

The Human World, Physical World and Sacred World are all interconnected and are imperative for any society to live harmoniously.

From the beginning of time Aboriginal peoples have worshipped a Creator Spirit and listened to his calling, and just like our God, the creator is the continuing source of life in both Aboriginal and Christian traditions.

The Little Long Walk

On Wednesday the staff and students of St Louis' School will be participating in "The Little Long Walk" The Long Walk was established on 21 November 2004 when Michael Long embarked on an historic trek, walking from his home in the suburbs of Melbourne all the way to Parliament House in Canberra – more than 650 kilometres away. He wanted the Prime Minister to help Aboriginal people.

Michael was joined on the road by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal supporters from all over Australia. Some walked in support for an hour, some for a day and some walked all the way to Canberra. As the walkers passed through the Victorian countryside, local people came out to meet them, offering encouragement, support and assistance.

Seeing Aboriginal and other Australians walking together, Michael’s Long Walk became a mission of hope.

The Long Walk provided a much-needed public opportunity, allowing Australians to express their commitment to reconciliation and a united Australia. Every year many schools and organisations throughout Australia take part in The Little Long Walk to acknowledge and show respect for our First Nations people so that is precisely what our school is doing!
