YOUNG VINNIES VISIT RUAH HARMONY PLACE REFUGE

Chris Vance (Year 12)

Last Thursday, nine Young Vinnies students in Years 10-12 were invited to Harmony Place Refuge, a Perth women’s shelter, to cook for and play with the children living at the shelter.

We arrived just in time to welcome the kids home from school with cream and jam pancakes and plenty of attention. Loom band bracelet making, wood blocks and lots of conversation filled the shelter’s common room for an hour and a half before we had to say our goodbyes.

Thanks to the generous donations made by Sacred Heart families, we were also able to deliver a series of items, such as food essentials and toiletries, to the shelter. It was such a rewarding experience and the kids were all so energetic and full of joy. We also donated clothes, long-life food and nappies.

The shelter are looking for donations of coffee, tomato sauce, tea, long-life milk, tea towels, jam, Vegemite, peanut paste, Milo, cake mix and salt and pepper. Donations of any of these items will be greatly appreciated and can be handed in to Mrs Hywood’s office in the Highgate Centre.

For our Year 12s, this was their last visit to the shelter but rest assured, younger Vinnies members are welcome to attend on future visits.

Thank you College parent, Mr Todd Vladich, for once again driving the bus, and to Mrs Hywood for organising the day trip and collating the donation packages.
