OUT AND ABOUT IN WEEK 6

Despite the disrupted term we are all experiencing, there is still a lot happening in our classrooms and students are stepping up creatively and stepping out academically.

In the Academic Pillar land, everything-is-go this term with ICAS just around the corner. These opt-in, online assessments are designed to recognise and reward academic excellence across multiple disciplines: Mathematics, English, Science, Writing and Digital Technology.

Sacred Heart has been offering this opportunity for all students since 2013 and we have had at least one student win the Gold medal in every subject area since then. This is exceptional given that ICAS is an international competition that attracts the most capable students in each subject discipline.

A big thanks to Mrs Tanya Atherton, Head of GATE, who makes it possible for our students to test themselves and shine against the best-of-the-best.

Year 7 Engineering are finishing a Gizmos and Gadgets unit where they use littleBits technology to develop and bring to life creative ideas. Their challenge was to create a solution to a problem faced in the Disney-verse: How can Olaf avoid melting? How can Cinderella get that housework done? How can the toys know when Andy is coming?

Their Shark Tank style pitches were a treat as they showcased their innovation, critical thinking and collaboration skills.

India Schneider (Barlow) and Siofra Cashman (Hannan) revealed their Innovation skills with their Cindy Sweeper – a robot clearer complete with broom and other gadgets to keep that house clean in half the time.

Cody Thackray (Trinity), Sebi Catalano (Kimberley) and Kaea Maxwell (Normandy) impressed with their pitch - offering a fully realised rationale and marketing approach for their Anger Management Massage Chair, designed to help Anger from InsideOut to control his emotions, but also a product likely to be popular in the real world…

Kudos to Mr Neil Gray and his team of budding engineers!
