Year 6 Canberra Camp

On Monday morning we saw off our Year 6 students attending the Canberra Camp experience. We wish all students and staff attending the camp the very best for a memorable week.

Reconciliation Week 2022

From the 27 May until 3 June it is National Reconciliation Week! This is a special week where we celebrate Indigenous history, achievements and culture in Australia and an opportunity to foster reconciliation, conversation and engagement.

You can read about the significance of these dates on the Reconciliation Australian website: https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/about-nrw/.

This year's theme is "Be Brave. Make Change." which encourages all Australians to Be Brave in our daily actions where we live, work, play and socialise in order to Make Change for the benefit of all Australians. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

You can also visit the Reconciliation Australia website for more information about Reconciliation Week and how you can make a difference: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/.

National Sorry Day

Every 26 May, National Sorry Day reminds Australians to remember the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout history. It is a reminder of the forceful removal of Indigenous children from their families and communities in the 20th century that led to the Stolen Generations.Brookside College acknowledges the Stolen Generations and the historical and ongoing impact of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. National Sorry Day provides an important opportunity to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations survivors and their families and to reflect on the role we must all play in the healing process.

Campfire Conversation

On Thursday 26 May, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community were invited to attend a Campfire Conversation, where we came together to reflect on how we can strengthen our Koori community connection. We hope to hold more of these Campfire Conversations in the future.

Mobile Phones at School

We would like to remind our students and families of our expected behaviours when students bring their mobile phones to school:

  • students in Years 7-9 must keep their phones in their bag from the moment they enter the school gates, and secure their bag in their lockers
  • students in Years 5-6 must secure their phones in the lockboxes which are located in their classrooms.

All students are required to provide their own lock for their locker or classroom lockbox & provide a spare key/code to their homegroup teacher in the event that they misplace their key or forget their code.At dismissal, students are to ensure phones remain in their bags until they exit the school gates.

For further information, please refer to the Mobile Phone policy on our website.

Reminder - Pupil Free Day Tuesday 7th June

Please be advised that Brookside College will be having a staff Professional Practice Day on Tuesday 7 June. This will be a pupil free day for all students so please ensure that you make alternative arrangements. Camp Australia will be available to provide care (upon registration) for any families who need this service. Staff are entitled to Professional Practice Days (PPDs) in accordance with the Victorian Government Schools Agreement so that they may focus on the improved delivery of high-quality teaching and learning. The Department of Education and Training (DET) has approved schools to conduct pupil free professional practice days this term.

P-6 Monday Morning Assemblies

It has been fantastic to see the way in which our Monday morning assemblies for P-6 students have been received so positively by our school community. This is a very exciting initiative with a strong purpose of building connections and a positive school culture. Students have been doing a wonderful job assembling under the hayshed Monday mornings, and we welcome parents, guardians and carers to join our Monday morning assemblies if they wish.

NAPLAN

We would like to acknowledge the efforts of all students in Years 3, 5, 7, & 9 who participated in NAPLAN this year, and commend them for their positive attitude during an overall successful NAPLAN week. It was the first time that Brookside College conducted the NAPLAN tests online and the students did incredibly well throughout the whole process.

Education Week

This year, Education Week celebrated the strengths and achievements of Victoria's government education sector through the theme “150 Years of Public Education”, which coincided with this milestone anniversary for Victoria. It was wonderful to see so many of our families onsite during the week, visiting classrooms as part of our  Education Week Celebrations.
