From the Principal

What an absolute joy it is to be back at school after my week of long service leave. The caring and happy greetings from the students, parents and staff has made me even more grateful to be working with such a positive and connected school community.

COLOUR RUN

Our determined student body have succeeded in their goal to raise enough money to replace the old drinking troughs with new water fountains with their final fundraiser being an absolute hit.

Thank you to all our families for your outstanding support which will now see the installation of 4 new water stations during the upcoming school holidays.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss French for her smooth organisation of the Colour Run which brought so many smiles.

See the article later in this newsletter.

WELCOME TO OUR MURRUMBEENA BABIES

Mrs Brennan, Mrs Monotti, Mrs Parker and Mrs Bongers have all taken maternity leave around the same time to enjoy all that parenthood brings. Two babies have been born and two are yet to say hello to the world.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Monotti on the birth of their third child, Emilio Pierre, born on Friday 6 May.

We also congratulate Mr and Mrs Brennan on the birth of their first child Samuel Thomas who was born on Saturday 14 May.

From our MPS community, we wish you years of joy.

WINTER IS HERE (and so is FLU season)

With the predicted flu and covid wave looming ahead, it’s more important than ever that parents and school staff work together to reinforce the importance of hygiene practices. This is particularly vital so that together we can protect our medically vulnerable students.

Let’s constantly remind students of the following:

  • Cough (or sneeze) into your elbow
  • Wash and sanitise hands regularly
  • Wash hands after touching your face mask, mouth, eyes or nose
  • Wear a mask if you are well, but still coughing
  • Wear a mask indoors at school and take a daily rapid antigen test for 5 days if you are a close contact.

If a child is constantly coughing (or sneezing) in class, but they have been cleared to return to school, the teacher will ask the child to wear a mask when indoors so that others are protected. We thank you for your support with this action.

SNOW SPORTS

We are excited to announce that this year we will be supporting our very first MPS Snow Sports team.

We’ve officially registered in the 2022 Interschool Snowsport Championships. This competition provides an opportunity for school students of all ages to experience snow sport and to participate at either a recreational or competitive level.

Is your family interested?

Join us in a Webex meeting on Wednesday 8 June to find out more.

A Compass post will be sent this week with Webex log in details.

This will be an informal meeting to provide general information about the 2022 Interschool Snow Sports Competition. You’ll hear from students who have participated in previous competitions and there’ll be plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

2022 NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians - individuals, families, communities, organisations and government - to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.

National Reconciliation Week - 27 May to 3 June - is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Reconciliation is an ongoing journey that reminds us that while generations of Australians have fought hard for meaningful changes, future gains are likely to take just as much, if not more, effort.

To assist in this collective effort, our school integrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture, history and stories into units of inquiry where there is a natural connection.

For example, our Year 3 students through the ‘How We Express Ourselves’ unit are inquiring into historical and significant events which includes recognition of our First People’s perspective. With more Australians demonstrating cultural inclusivity, we will be on the way to genuine reconciliation.

CAMP

Both the year 5 and the year 6 students attended camp last week.

Thank you to our families who took action to look after student health in the lead up to the camp, which has meant that there were no Covid cases at all.

Both camp venues reported once again that our students were an absolute pleasure with their manners and positive camaraderie.

Thanks kids, you make our school proud.

SOCIAL AND FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Our School Council Social and Fundraising committee, along with their parent helpers, have once again run a wonderful event.

The sausage sizzle and cake stall at the election was a huge success and raised $3853.

Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the many parents who baked and created some delicious looking goodies and also the parents who helped out on the day, so to each of you, we thank you.

 SEMESTER ONE REPORTS

With formal assessments almost complete, teachers will utilise the pupil free day on Tuesday 14 June (the day after the long weekend) to moderate assessments scores and commence the process of writing reports. Reports will be posted to parents via Compass on Thursday 23 June (the second last day of term 2).
