Interschool Sport

What a few weeks in sport!

Everything is coming up Softball

The Intermediate Softball Girls came Runners Up in the Southern Metro Division played on Monday 10th May at Kingston Heath. This qualified the team to go to the State School Victoria Finals on Thursday 26 May.

Arriving at school a little earlier than usual the team headed off to Jells Park Softball Fields on a frosty morning to take on Beaumaris in the opening game. It seemed that Chelt. could have done with a warm-up session, losing the game by just a few runs. Although the team won games two and three convincingly, this was not enough to see us through to the final.

What a great group of girls on this team! This is the 4th year that this group has fielded a softball team to represent Cheltenham and their second run at a state flag. We can't wait to see what they bring to the senior age group in 2023.

We had ample staff to support the team, thank you Miss O'Brien-D'Ambra for coaching through to the finals and Miss Anneke Stracke (student teacher) for her softball coaching skills and her outstanding support and sportsmanship towards our students.

The Cheltenham Year 8 Softball Girls headed to the Southern Metro Finals on Wednesday 11th May and brought home the red Runners Up flag. The school were contacted the following day and the team have been invited to play in the State Finals in November.

The Chelt Year 7 Softball Girls played in the Southern Metro Finals and played well in some very close games but unfortunately missed out by a mere percentage on qualifying for finals.

Cross Country

It was a fresh but thankfully not wet (or unlucky) Friday the 13th when 45 students were shuttled to and from Karkarook Park for the Beachside Cross Country Competition.

Congratulations to the following students who have qualified for the Southern Metro Regional Cross Country at Cruden Farm Langwarrin on June 23.

Gemma Apostolopoulos, Justin Buttigieg, Grace Campbell, Joshua Keys, Angus Monaghan, Owen Murray, Riley Del Los Rios, Jordan Jacobs, Ethan Rees, Brendan Chhun, Timothy Kelly, Sarah Shanks, Ethan Williams, Katya Kagan

Senior Beachside Round Robin

Wednesday 18th May saw our Senior Students head out to sport to finish off their Term 2 Round Robin events, having competed in Netball and Football earlier in the term. Thank you to our enthusiastic Year 12s for their commitment to play their last ever Interschool Sport competition, we hope that you all had a great day and plenty of fun.

Intermediate Beachside Round Robin

Congratulations to the Intermediate students who filled all the teams for their Term 2 Round Robin on May 25th.

We had great representation with, two soccer teams, four badminton teams, two netball teams, a handball team and a football team. Great effort to you all!

Intermediate Boys Football Round Robin

It was a perfect day for footy down at Le Page for the Interschool Intermediate Football Round Robin. Mr Matthews and Mr Collings had the honour of coaching 31 enthusiastic Year 9 and 10 boys who didn't disappoint.

Honestly, it was challenging giving all of the squad playing time whilst keeping one eye on the win. The boys were great and understood that we were keen to give everyone a go, especially after the lack of sporting opportunities over the past couple of years.

They were courageous and never stopped running, which impressed the coaches no end. The team was led by their fearsome captain Luca Guida and the always talkative Charlie (buckets) Aldridge didn't let them down as Vice-Captain 'snagging' a few important goals throughout the day. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a late goal against the eventual winner, Glen Eira and although we had a contentious draw in our first game against Elwood, our overall percentage, boosted by the Year 10 dominance against Melbourne High saw the boys earn second place for the day. The Year 9 boys held their own too and we are already excited for the 2023 Inters and Senior teams! Go Chelt!

Best players for the day were in no particular order: Luca Guida (freakish toughness and skills), Harley Jacobs (Mr Reliable), Millar Harris (golfer playing footy - tough!), Jack Sotiriadis (best run with roll of the day), Ben McGowan (courageous - play anywhere), Rudi Coggins (in and under against bigger bodies - brave!), Lachie O'Meara (silky skills - good decision maker), Archie Trevellyan (endurance machine) Paes Kemp (inspirational leadership - took to the whiteboard) and Brodie Bochel (uncompromising and relentless pressure).

Well done to all the boys. It was a great day, played with great spirit and sportsmanship!

Mr C.
