Year 9 Religion ‘Images of Jesus’
Year 9 students have been exploring the many dimensions of Jesus through the power of image. Commencing with the Commandment of Love as Jesus’ defining ethical teaching, we considered the qualities Jesus exemplified. In contrasting the precious artistic representations of Jesus in the Mount Erin Chapel with the irreverent surrealism of Year 7 Art’s ‘Mambo Jesus’ in the front foyer of the school, a diversity of personal responses to the Son of God became apparent. Subsequently, students reflected on the prayer ‘Christ has No Body Now but Yours’ by St Teresa of Avila in creating their own images of Jesus with the Kildare community in mind.
The Images of Jesus unit is a wonderful opportunity to pause and reflect on the person of Jesus. In contrast to the hundreds of fleeting images our young people are bombarded with daily, contemplating the value of traditional and contemporary representations of Christ nurtures a deeper understanding of our beliefs and actions as Christians in the modern world.
Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which He looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which He blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are His body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.
St. Teresa of Ávila
