RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

WHAT MAKES A STEREOTYPE?

Advertisers have made use of stereotypes for decades. Stereotypes communicate ideas quickly by appealing to clichés and generalisations. Detrimentally, stereotypes can also reinforce negative assumptions and beliefs about particular groups of people.

Some of us might believe that a lot of these stereotypes were more prevalent back in the days of our youth or our parents'/grandparents' eras when this sort of message was not uncommon...

Thankfully such ideas wouldn't pass muster these days but are contemporary advertisers just more clever and their messages more nuanced? We encourage you to take on the stereotype challenge and critique the advertising that your child is exposed to. Helping your child to be alert to negative or inequitable representations of people is one way to foster respectful relationships and broaden the narrative of gender roles.

WELCOME TO OUR PARENT MEMBERS

As we undergo training from the Department to bring Respectful Relationships to RPS, we welcome Lena (parent of Jasmine in Year 4 and Fabien in Year 1) and Kara (parent of Oli in Year 2). Lena and Kara will provide a parent voice as we undertake some baseline assessments and develop goals for our community. Stay tuned!
