Victorian Day Trips Camp

Melbourne Culture Day

This Monday, July 31st, a small group of year 9’s, 10’s and 11’s got the opportunity to explore a few museums to start our camp week around Victoria. We had the pleasure of going to the Melbourne Museum and the NGV visiting the Fantastic Beasts Exhibition, The Ian Potter Centre and Melbourne Now as well as having free time to roam any other available exhibitions.

The majority of the students also went as a group during free time and got to explore the Forest Secrets section of the Melbourne Museum as well as Bugs Alive and the Dinosaur Walk.

While at the NGV we went to Remaking Home and got to create a collage of plants and animals over a blank background to recreate wildlife. This was an engaging learning experience as well as a chance for the different grade levels and people on these trips to get to know each other!

Zoo Trip

On Tuesday, we headed off on the school bus bright and early on a trip to the Melbourne Zoo. Once we arrived we split into groups and had a few hours of free choice, to visit any animal sanctuaries that interested us. We visited some Dingos, Monkeys, Tasmanian Devils, Seals and many more creatures. A highlight of the trip for me was meeting Bella the seal, who was rescued by the Marine Rescue Unit. Since she would've been unable to care for herself if returned to the wild, the crew decided to rehabilitate and keep her at the zoo.

Our tour guide Alicia, introduced us to the idea of energy conservation, specifically honing in on projects we could create to help do our part to protect endangered animals, and the environment which they grow up in.

It was such a privilege to have the opportunity to not only see and interact with our favourite animals, but to also be educated on what we, as a community, can do to give back to our wildlife. I would strongly recommend going on the day trips, specifically visiting the zoo, as it was such an enjoyable experience in which you are able to freely explore and learn about the sanctuary with your friends.

Ice Skating

On Wednesday during camp week, a group of Preshil students got to go ice skating and to the Arts at District Docklands as a part of the Vic Day Trips.

The day started by traveling by train to the Docklands and heading to the O'Brien ice house. This was the big highlight of the day because it allowed me to try something new and exciting.

Skating with all my friends was enjoyable, even though we had a few falls.

After the skating, we had lunch and headed to the Artvo, where numerous mini photoshoots took place in front of the amazing art.

Overall this was one of my favourites of the Vic day trips, and everyone had a lot of fun.

Geelong Day Trip

Our trip to Geelong offered a unique blend of educational exploration and leisurely enjoyment.

We visited the old Geelong gaol where we learnt about prisoners who resided there and got to experience first hand what prison was like in the past. We were taught about things like the death mask which was (as the name suggests) a cast from a corpse, and how certain prisoners died in the gaol.

We then set off for lunch where I found the most amazing array of gift stores on my journey for food - I really wanted to stay and browse but my group had other plans. We then visited the Geelong Gallery where we spent some time looking at paintings and discussing the meaning behind them. On our way back we were all tired and I think most of us slept, I wasn't expecting much from Geelong but it really impressed me and it was a great day.

Morning Peninsula Trip

On Friday, we embarked on a trip down to the Mornington Peninsula where we did a plethora of exciting things. When we got there, we did a summit walk of Arthur’s Seat Eagle park. It had absolutely gorgeous views of the coast and the wildlife of the park. Unfortunately, we did not have the chance to go in the Gondolas as it was too windy. Then we went to a gallery-MPRG. It had many wonderful art pieces and a great Indigenous art collection. But this was just a stopover on the way to Flinders, where we had lunch and went to the Chocolaterie and had lots of delicious fun.

Then we needed our day with a relaxing trip to the Peninsula Hot Springs. The water was magnificent and incredibly relaxing and serene. Overall, this day was my personal favourite of the lot and we all had lots of fun.
