Foundation  - Year 1/2

We have had yet another busy and fun week in the F-2 learning space! There has been so much happening this week, we can’t wait to share it with you.

We began our week by celebrating Science Week with our chemical experiments. As  scientists, we explored the scientific process which incorporates posing questions, making observations, forming and testing a hypothesis then analysing the information to come to a conclusion. In the F-2 space, we held multiple experiments. As researchers, we have been finding out about how the earth moves, so for our first experiment we investigated what happens when we mix baking soda and vinegar. We found out that this causes an explosion, just like a volcano! As investigators, we then explored what happens when we pour food dye into the shaving cream. We concluded that the food dye slowly drips through the shaving cream, just like rain!

Those of us in Foundation also explored the reactions flowers have when you place flowers in a vase with just water, red food dye and blue food dye! As researchers, we found out that these reactions cause the flowers to change colour. The white flowers turned blue when placed in the blue food dye, turned red when placed in the red food dye and there was no change in the plain water.

On Wednesday, those of us in 1/2 participated in our long awaited Maths Game Day! With the help of our fabulous host and numeracy leader Mrs Monaghan, we engaged in a variety of different games that required us to think mathematically using our reasoning and problem-solving skills. We broke off into teams and challenged each other throughout three rounds across the day.  As mathematicians, we started round one with a rotation of activities that explored our knowledge of shapes, time, number, measurement and addition. In round two we challenged our opponents in one-on-one problem-solving games such as tic-tac-toe, connect four, checkers and paddocks. After lunch we held our last challenge. As critical thinkers and collaborators, we had to work as a team to solve open-ended problems. At the end of the day, points were tallied across the whole day and the winning team was…Nefeli, Orlando, Felix and VeronicaThis day was a highlight for everyone and we can’t wait to do this again in the future!

As part of our last inquiry in Term 2 ‘How do living things change and grow?’ some of us in 1/2 created nonfiction books. To take this stage of the inquiry process further, we have begun reading these books to our friends in the senior year levels. As readers, we engaged in small groups with our books and read to the other students. It was wonderful to see the junior students be self-managers in their learning by informing others.

This week is yet another busy week in Term 3. On Tuesday 23rd of August, we are holding our Book Week Parade in the morning. We can’t wait to see everyone’s costumes! We are then heading off to Scienceworks on Wednesday 24th of August to explore our inquiry question  ‘What makes it move?’  As inquirers, we will be finding out about the weather and different toys and how they move.

Year 3/4

Happy Science Week everyone!

To celebrate Science Week, the Year 3/4 students participated in a Science experiment morning on Wednesday. Students engaged in three different experiments including making corny goo, observing dancing raisins and making gas to blow up balloons.

As scientists, students predicted what would happen when the materials were mixed together to create a  chemical reaction. Take a look at our fun science experiments!

Congratulations to Olivia (3/4KD) for winning first place for her amazing and beautiful singing at the "Re-generation Youth Festival 2022". Olivia, we are all so proud of you! What a superstar you are!

We are looking forward to seeing all of our fabulous frocks for Book Week!

Year 3/4 Teachers

Belinda Panzarino, Katarina Davidson and Graham Troy

Year 5/6

We have had an exciting week in the SLA, busily twirling, balancing, experimenting, hypothesising, competing and inquiring, just to name a few verbs!

Our circus lessons have continued, with the students practising their skills of twirling hoops, spinning plates, and balancing a diabolo which is then spun on a string stretched between the tips of two sticks. All involved are having a great time, particularly when practising the human pyramid!

We celebrated ‘Science Week’, and both the students and teachers enjoyed thinking, testing and recording findings like a scientist!  Experiments have included ‘Squishy Ice Cream’, ‘Fizzy Sherbet’ and ‘Corny Goo’. Students completed a science report for each experiment, which included the aim, hypothesis, materials, method, results, discussion, diagrams and conclusion. It was interesting that each of the experiments was based on a different scientific theory and provided rich discussion regarding the findings!  We also investigated and explored what constitutes a ‘fair test’. The students are to be congratulated on the enthusiastic and collaborative manner in which they participated in the activities throughout Science Week!

As part of our Year 6/ Foundation Buddy Program, we were very excited to welcome the Foundation students as they shared their learning about animals. The Year 5/6 students were so impressed by their buddy’s knowledge and the manner in which they had presented it. This program continues to demonstrate the benefits for both age groups, and promotes a sense of community and belonging in the school.

Congratulations to the Year 5/6 students who competed in the SSV Coburg District Athletics Carnival. Thank you for your enthusiastic participation and good sportsmanship.

We are looking forward to the ‘Book Week’ Parade tomorrow. Students are encouraged to dress as a book character. The theme for this year is ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open.’

Have a great week.

Kind Regards,

Michelle Casamento, Viviana Clarke, Annette Gasbarro and Olivia Sargent

5/6 Teaching Team.
