News and new acquisitions
Mrs Margaret Schaefer (nee McRae) visited the Archives Room this week, donating a monogrammed plate which she has kept from her time as a past student of St Ursula’s College (she attended 1952 – 1956).
Margaret became the secretary to the De La Salle College principal, Br Geoffrey Moloney, from 1971. The principal of the Brothers was called“Brother Director”. As the only secretary, she was bursar, first aid person, student support, parent liaison and more. She can be seen herein the college magazine with the first computer used in her role – a far cry from the technology applied in the College today!
Margaret recalls that the De La Salle swimming pool (with the high diving board), was filled in during the first O’Connor days, due to the expense of maintenance. Margaret tells us there was a well on the agriculture plot which provided water for the pool; the site is now being built over, behind the gym.
Margaret is very nostalgic about her time at St Ursula’s College, De La Salle College and O’Connor Catholic High School. Her involvement frames a large slice of the history of our present College.
