Grade 6 Green Team interviews Zoe Daniel at BPS Assembly
Last week, the Grade 6 Leadership Green Team hosted a visit by Zoe Daniel to our school. Zoe Daniel is the federal member of Parliament for Goldstein. Both our school, and the suburb of Brighton, are located in this electorate. We had the idea to invite Zoe a few months ago as we wanted her to see our school and ask her questions.
Zoe started her visit with a brief school tour. During the tour, Zoe was able to see many of our ageing portable classrooms - some over 50 years old. Our school needs significant financial support and funding to improve our school facilities including replacing the old relocatable classrooms with new modern classrooms. This was an opportunity for Zoe Daniel to further understand this issue and support our school and infrastructure investment at the federal level.
After the tour, we hosted the assembly and asked Zoe questions that covered topics such as: Climate Change & Action, Gender Diversity & working as a Member of Parliament.
During the interview, we learned that Zoe had worked as a journalist for 27 years. During that time she reported on politics, war, natural disasters and some major sporting events. She became a politician because she wanted to help take action against climate change, support equal rights for women and represent the views of the local community.
Zoe shared that life as a member of parliament is (so far) rewarding and very busy. On the day before she visited our school, she attended 9 different community events!
We asked Zoe about Climate Action and what we can be doing to help. Zoe said that there was a lot for the government to do and some progress is being made. There are also some actions even us kids and households can do. These include turning off lights we don’t use, walking instead of driving and not buying clothes and items we don’t need. These are little steps we can take that can have a big impact. We shared this video at assembly to help other students understand about Climate Change. Here is the slide deck we presented at our school assembly when interviewing Zoe Daniel.
Interviewing Zoe was a great learning experience for us. We were able to practise our public speaking by asking questions in front of a large audience. Another thing that was fun was being able to meet the member for Goldstein. We worked really hard on this event so it was rewarding to see the plan finally come to life.
