Term 3 week 7

House Athletics

What a great day we had at the House Athletics last week. Rain did not dampen our spirits in the least. As you will have read elsewhere in this newsletter; our biggest joy was seeing and hearing everyone encouraging and cheering each other on. The way they supported their teammates and classmates was quite heartening and showed great sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Xavier House on the overall win.

Book Week

Another fun-filled and fantastic week of activities centred around one aspect of the curriculum. Maths week covered in the last newsletter and Book Week in this one.

We have enjoyed exploring various of the CBCA Shortlisted books and doing lots of engaging tasks.

Our Book Week Parade is an annual treat and the children all looked superb. Thank you to all the families who helped and created the amazing costumes and supported the kids to be so creative. For those who missed the parade we have created a montage for you to enjoy.

Sacred Heart's Got Talent

Indeed we do ... how amazing are our students, they continually astonish us. This week was the long-awaited Talent Quest and it was fabulous to see the students step out of their comfort zones to perform in front of their peers and school mates. From Dancers, Singers, Magicians, Jokers and Jesters they all joined in to amuse and engage us. What I found to be the best thing was seeing them support each other through their nerves and even step in at short notice to perform multiple times. I had goose bumps watching them and I know everyone enjoyed the experience. Thank you to Issy, Ollie, Adam and Bowie for coming up with the idea and to Miss Bryce for organising.

Beach walk

One of the books we covered was 'Walk of the Whales' by Nick Bland.

The CBCA judges say...

The magic and mystery of childhood imaginings are combined with the grand possibilities of illustrations, and a profound message about humanity’s interconnection with the planet. This weighty message is handled with a delicate touch, rhythmic text and a balance of imagination, humour and truth. There is a touching moment when a child queries the situation and the emotion in the whale’s blunt reply is beautifully framed by the tear in its eye. Less about pollution, this is a book about possibilities: the exchange of rubbish for the whales foregrounds the principle that for every action in nature, there is a consequence and there is always a fresh story and connection to discover.

As a response we chose to take a walk down to the beach to see what we could clean up. We invited our buddies and the Preps to join us and had a fabulous time down there. Thank you to the parents that joined us; as always these things require extra hands and eyes and parental help is invaluable.

iPads & Headphones

Please remind the children that it is their responsibility to make sure their iPads are on the charger at night and that they remember to bring them to school EVERY day. Having said that … we must remember that they are only children and that they are only beginning the journey of responsibility for their own learning. Please support and assist them with developing good study and organisational habits. The iPads are used in most lessons one way or another to enhance learning and having to work around flat batteries or missing devices can be frustrating.

Headphones are also required at school and are important for tasks in class. Please make sure they are labelled and in good working order.

Homework

There has been a good improvement in the standard of effort and presentation recently and we look forward to seeing continual growth. Our fortnightly grids are a mix of tasks designed to engage students at their own level. Open ended tasks allow students to interact and complete the tasks independently. We explain details and expectations in class and are readily available if they need further explaining.

Sometimes they may require assistance at home, if you have questions please feel free to come along to Homework Help on Mondays straight after school in 3/4CM. It is a great opportunity to hear first hand what expectations etc are and to understand what the tasks involve.

As always we are available on the Oval for a chat every afternoon at pick up, or for a longer appointment please email us.

Until next time,
