“There is no friend as loyal as a book.”― Ernest Hemingway

Dear Parents and families,

Wow what a wonderful fortnight we have had at Sacred Heart, whether it has been on the Athletics track, on the stage during Sacred Heart has got Talent or dressed up at the annual book parade, our students have certainly had  a moment to "shine". The students are so fortunate to have these opportunities to broaden their learning and to keep them engaged and interested in school.

BOOK WEEK 2022

22nd-26th August

It was an absolute thrill to host our Biggest Book Parade ever, after 3 years it was a delighttosee all our students (and parents) go to so much effort with their costumes and really think about their favourite book characters. Thank you to all the parents who were able to come along and watch the parade, it was so lovely seeing you all there! I'd also like to thank the staff for the amazing enthusiasm with their costumes. Mr Collis was missing and Where's Wally joined the Butterfly from The very Hungry Caterpillar  on the gate to greet the students on Wednesday morning and what  a buzz in the air! Its one of my favourite days of the school year!

Dreaming with Eyes open

This years topic for the children's Book Council of Australia was Dreaming with eyes open. There were so many wonderful shortlisted books that the classes explored, discussed and reflected upon. One of the books "Walk of the Whales' made a significant impact

that the students from Prep-Year 4 went on a beach walk today to pick up rubbish to help our local environment. What wonderful citizens we are creating. The Junior students from prep to year 2 participated in reading rotations about the different books and they followed up with  a craft activity. They used recycled plastic to create and decorate their amazing whales!

There were so many wonderful activities using the shortlisted books from students across the school. We celebrated this in assembly this morning.

Author and Illustrator visit-Chris Kennet

This afternoon we had  a talented Author and illustrator in Chris Kennet to run workshops with each area of the school. It was  a delight to see how engaged the students were to learn about the process when  illustrating a book. Chris is a digital illustrator and he taught the students how to draw with imagination and take risks. They created some wonderful creative illustrations and developed the craft of digital illustration.

LITERACY STAFF MEETING

On Thursday after school the Sacred heart staff participated in a literacy meeting learning about Scarborough's reading rope. We learnt about the fundamental aspects of reading and the importance of Decoding, Phonics and phonemic awareness and how the MSL program link sin with this and how this is vital for students learning to read and then the other aspects of vocabulary. knowledge, background knowledge, language structures literacy knowledge and verbal reasoning play a part in comprehension once they have learnt to read. This is all intertwined to create the rope. If one part of the rope is missing, students can have difficulty reading.

Sacred Heart has got Talent

What a brilliant initiative from one of the students to ask for a talent show at Sacred Heart and Miss Bryce took on the challenge whole heartedly and was so well supported by other staff and student leaders. The students had a wonderful time performing last Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime and recess or watching as an audience member, whilst enjoying their popcorn. All funds go to St Joseph's Primary School up on the NSW coast affected by recent floods. Congratulations to all the students, you showed such courage and bravery!

KINDER VISITS

It has been lovely to return to Nagle kindergarten this week with our Year 4 students and continue to build our community connections. This is definitely a highlight for the year 4 students and kinder students alike. They are now making painting and pictures for each other. On Thursday we had  a pretend Birthday party and sang Happy birthday with a mud cake! What joy to be in the presence of the 4 year old creative minds!

Father's Day stalls & assembly

A reminder that Father's day is nearly upon us and our Father's day stalls will take place next Wednesday 31st and Thursday 1st September, ably run by our P & F parents, there will be many items for students to buy so please send money along. Our Father's day assembly will be next Friday 2nd September and Dad's Footy day will be on Saturday 3rd September. Go SH!

PLAYGROUP

Our first Little Hearts playgroup was a huge success and it was so lovely to connect with current and new families. the pre schoolers had a chance to have Storytime and some play with the Year 5 and 6 students, and have some outdoor playtime, what  a beautiful positive way to close out the week and celebrate our community.

WHACKY WEDNESDAY RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY

A reminder that students can dress with a "touch of whacky" for ride to school day next Wednesday for a gold coin donation for the Royal children's hospital.

Final Thoughts.....

At the end of the school day ask your children what are 3 good things that happened today?

This positive psychology and mindset is what we want to instil in our students.

Wishing you all  a safe, healthy and happy weekend,
