Year 9s immersed in local workplaces

Year 9 students have been participating in a range of local workplace visits to explore the possibilities that exist within the local community for jobs and careers as they get ready to enter the workforce and their senior years of study. The first of these was on Wednesday, August 10, when students visited Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), Aquamoves and the Shepparton Museum, where they had the opportunity to talk with various people about their jobs and the facilities.

On Friday, students visited the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE), the Chocolate Apple Factory and Riverside Gardens at Emerald Bank, Kialla, as part of their workplace visits. This week they are off to the award-winning Eden Farm and Eden Farm Produce in Numurkah. Some students will also visit Furphy's in Shepparton and EDP Mooroopna. Students have written about their experiences below:

"On the 19th of August, the Year 9 cohort went down to Emerald Bank. The MOVE Motor Museum, mini golf and the Chocolate

Apple Factory were open for us. The MOVE Motor Museum had a range of cars, motorbikes, trucks and buses to look at. The highlight of the museum was the olden day cars and the buses that you could walk in and have a good look at the inside of. Mini golf was a good experience to have with your friends and good fun competing and having a laugh. Mini golf went for 45 minutes then we went on to the Chocolate Apple Factory to buy some chocolate apples, but most importantly we heard from the owners of the Chocolate Apple Factory about how to run a business. Our focus this term is finding out what different jobs there are to offer and what jobs we can get into. They talked about what they do and their day-to-day work around their job. The whole day was great and gaining experience was even better. Thank you so much to the MOVE Museum, the Chocolate Apple Factory and mini golf for hosting us."

"In Global Learning this term, the Year 9s are exploring jobs and careers and how career progression works. On Wednesday, all Year 9 students went on an excursion to the Shepparton lake where we were able to go to Aquamoves, the Heritage Museum and SAM (Shepparton Art Museum). In SAM we got to experience all the different pathways and career options you can have, as well as learning that there are a wide range of jobs in this area that aren’t always just being an artist. We also got to take a look at all the pieces of art that people have created.

In the Heritage Museum we got to explore the history of Shepparton and what it looked like hundreds of years ago, as well as the development of our town. We got to see old and historical objects like typewriters and pieces of Shepparton's buildings.

Lastly at Aquamoves we engaged in a combat group session where we got to be instructed by a personal trainer and learn about the jobs that can be involved in this area of fitness and wellbeing and casual job opportunities for us at this age. Our favourite part of this day was going to Aquamoves and participating in combat training as well as exploring through the Heritage Museum and seeing all of the history of Shepparton.

Identity, gender and relationships explored

Throughout Weeks 7-10 of Term 3 and Weeks 1-4 of Term 4, Year 8 students will be completing the Religious Education unit 'Identity, Gender & Relationships’. The unit provides opportunities for adolescents to explore the development of their identity as individuals through a Christian lens, and the recognition that this is one of many perspectives. It also considers issues, behaviours, rights and responsibilities of individuals in a variety of relationships. The unit seeks to promote social and emotional skills and positive gender norms in young people, in order to reduce the incidence of antisocial behaviour, including engagement in gender-related violence.

Due to the nature of this unit, students will be covering sensitive content. The Year 8 team invites parents/carers who have any concerns or questions about the learning, to contact them directly or their child’s Pastoral Group Leader.
