We're dressing up for Book Week!

School of Wonder children are invited to dress up on Friday, August 26, to celebrate Book Week. This year's theme is Dreaming with Eyes Open and children are encouraged to dress as a book character.

Children will have the opportunity to participate in a Book Week dress-up parade after Pastoral Group on Friday, at approximately 9:10am. Parents are welcome to watch the parade. Children should come to school dressed in their Book Week costume and pack their school uniform in their bag to get changed into after the parade if they wish to. Children will participate in various activities throughout the day to celebrate Book Week.

Book Week is a great opportunity for families to share and celebrate with one another a love of reading. Families might like to have a reading night at home, sharing favourite stories with one another, or a device-free night where everyone spends some time reading. We look forward to celebrating a love of reading with the children at school.

Year 3 children are burgeoning authors

Year 3 children have moved onto a new writing focus where they have developed a list of questions to ask their client (Foundation child) in order to create a book for them. Questions like, "Who would you like the characters to be?" "Where is the setting?" "What is the problem going to be?" "How is the problem going to be solved?"

They have now used these ideas to plan and draft a story. They are excited to use their understanding of narrative writing and illustrative devices to create a unique story for their client. This learning links to our Inquiry, 'How we express ourselves - There is more than meets the eye', as children will show how they express themselves through writing and drawing.

They're poets and they know it

Year 3 children have been exploring poetry. To conclude their learning on poetry, children were presented with the 2022 Wombat Poetry and Short Story Awards competition with the theme 'A Bush Yarn'. Children chose what kind of poetry they wanted to do. Some wrote a colour, free verse, haiku or diamante poem. Some children chose to enter their poem into the competition. We had a lot of fun exploring poetry.

Children experience a world of dance

This term in Dance, children in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 are experiencing dance from around the world. Recently we took a trip to Japan, listening to traditional and modern music, seeing traditional and street dance. Children made a puppet using origami, a very old Japanese pastime. Puppet dancing is a popular activity in Japan. Children turned their puppet into an animal, and some made their own performances using their puppets, with music in the background.

Athletics egg-citement continues at college

School of Wonder children participated in many events at the St Anne's College Athletics Carnival on Thursday. Despite having to leave the athletics track earlier than anticipated due to the wet weather, the children were able to complete the day's schedule of events when they returned to the college, taking on a challenging egg and spoon race among other fun activities.
