Year 3

The year 3 team love to spill the tea on what's going on in our cohort, read below to find out the juicy information of what our glorious students are doing at school.

Maths:

The Year 3’s have begun a new topic, Operations, where they will be revisiting addition, subtraction, multiplication and division! In the past two weeks we have focused on revisiting our knowledge of place value while trying to apply that knowledge to assist us to solve equations and worded problems. Students have also been looking and chance and conducting some experiments involving chance.

See some of our awesome work below!

Writing:

In term 4, students have begun their Poetry unit in writing. They are beginning to identify the structure and purpose of different types of poems and using this knowledge to create their own! You can help your child at home by identifying rhyming words in their home reading or clapping out the syllables in words! Check out some of the shape poems from our grade 3 poets so far.

Reading:

In Reading, we have been introduced to a variety of poems, many by Australian poets such as C.J Dennis and Libby Hathorn. We have practiced taking note of our comprehension as we read and explained our thinking using evidence from the text. We have also explored themes and moods in poetry.

See an example of a poem we have read and identified the theme of.

The Teacher by CJ Dennis (1921)

I’d like to be a ___, and

have a clever brain,

Calling out, “Attention, please!” and “Must I speak in vain?”I’d be quite strict with boys and girls whose minds I had to train,And all the books and maps and things I’d carefully explain;I’d make then learn the dates of kings, and all the capes of Spain; But I wouldn’t be a __ if… I couldn’t use the cane.

Would you?

Science:

The focus for science in Term Four is Chemical Science.  Students have been developing the understanding of what can happen to solids and liquids when they are heated. Students made predictions and then discovered if these predictions were correct. During the second week, students worked in small groups with the aim of developing or finding a recipe that can change the selected ingredients from a solid, to a liquid or vice versa.  The recipes that matched the criteria included toffee, ‘sticky melted cheese sandwiches’ and a hot chocolate.

Did you know?

-At 0°C, ice will start melting and it will be changed in to water that is its liquid form. Water’s melting point is 0°C.

-Chocolate’s melting point is 25°C which is equal to normal temperature of a summer day. Keep increasing the temperature and at 25°C you will see that chocolate will start melting.

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

The Grade 4 students have settled back into term 4 with ease. Students are very excited to be heading off on their very first camp to The Summit in Week 8. Students will be departing on Monday the 21st of November and returning on Wednesday the 23rd of November. We cannot wait to see everyone involved in all the wonderful team building activities and seeing our Resilience grow!

Another very exciting event that students have the opportunity to take part in is our end of year celebration at Fun Fields theme park. Students will be heading off to have a day full of fun on Friday the 9th of December. Payment and consent for this event is due on Sunday the 4th of December.

Units of work:                                                                                                                                                        To start off the term, we are focusing on Poetry in Reading and Writing. We are looking at Operations, Money and Financial Mathematics, as well as Data and Graphs which is linked together with our Digital Technologies unit. To find out more about your child’s units of work please have a look at your child’s SeeSaw. Your child will also be uploading some work samples and evidence of their learning goals.

The Grade 4 students and teachers are looking forward to a busy and exciting term ahead!

Year 5

It has been a great start to Term 4 in Grade 5! Grade 5 Students have all begun the term in a positive manner and have been displaying the Brookside Values of Respect, Resilience, Relationships and Rights throughout the first 2 weeks of Term 4.

In Reading, students have been focussing on practicing their analysing, critiquing and inferring comprehension skills through reading a range of Poems. Students have read numerous types of poems such as Haikus, Limericks and Quatrains, whilst also focussing on the structure of these poem types and the features that they include. In Writing, students have constructed their own poems following these structures, whilst also including a range of features such as figurative language and rhyme.

In Numeracy, Grade 5 Students have been investigating the topic of Chance. Students listed outcomes of chance experiments with equally likely outcomes and represented these as fractions, whilst also creating their own Chance Game! Students have also begun learning about Measurement, which includes investigating time, length, volume, capacity and mass.

We all look forward to continuing to explore a range of engaging topics this term in Grade 5!

Kind regards,
