In Term 4, Grade 5/6 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:
English
Students in Grade 5 and 6 will be developing and enhancing their reading and writing skills through reading the class novel, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. This classic novel, which is set in both England and the magical land of Narnia, focuses on four siblings who team up with magical creatures to save their land. Students will be learning about the author C.S. Lewis. They will be interpreting, analysing and evaluating how text structures and language features work together to meet the purpose of the text; paying attention to the structure and language used by the author. Students will be activating and using prior knowledge to make connections with other texts. They will identify literal, inferential and evaluative levels of comprehension. They will also be summarising and synthesising whilst simultaneously developing and demonstrating knowledge using the appropriate oral language for audiences and occasions, including body language and voice.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will be using estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers to calculations. They will create sequences involving whole numbers, fractions and decimals. They will learn how to describe the rule used to create the sequence and investigate how to measure, calculate and compare elapsed time. Students will investigate and calculate percentage discounts of 10%, 25% and 50% on sale items, with and without digital technologies and following on from this they will apply this to create a financial plan. Furthermore, students will be revisiting and revising mathematics topics from throughout the year.
Science
In Science, students will learn about the layers of the Earth, plate tectonics and conduct a simple exploration of plate movement. They will learn about how and why earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis occur before conducting research into an event for each of these sudden geological changes. The students will create a 'cyclone in a bottle' and consider the impact of cyclones. They will create a piece of art depicting the impact of drought.
Humanities
In Humanities, students will be exploring a unit on ‘Bushfires and Floods’. They will learn about the impacts of fire on Australian vegetation and the significance of fire damage on communities. They will also explore how people can respond to these natural disasters. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land management will also be unpacked to develop a more holistic understanding of land management practices in Australia.
Circle Solutions
In Circle Solutions this term, students will explore concepts such as resilience and fair vs. equal. In our Respectful Relationships sessions, students will develop their social awareness, self-awareness and management skills through lessons on gender and identity, as well as positive gender relations. In addition to this, we will be using feedback collected from student surveys, in order for them to learn about emotional regulation and how to be safe on the internet.
Passion Projects
The students have been enjoying their Passion Projects this year. These have included role-plays, video game creations, dioramas and more. The teachers will be giving the students an opportunity soon to voice their suggestions for their final Passion Project of the year. We can't wait to get started already!
