In Term 4, Grade 4 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:
English
Students in Grade 4 will be developing their reading and writing skills through reading the class novel, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. This classic novel, which is set in both England and the magical land of Narnia, focuses on four siblings who team up with magical creatures to save their land. Students will be learning about the author C.S. Lewis. They will be analysing the text, paying attention to the structure and language used by the author. Students will also be exposed to new vocabulary. Additionally, students will practise speaking and writing in complete sentences, build on their comprehension, creative expression and critical thinking skills.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will be calculating the area and perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. They will be comparing objects using familiar metric units of area and volume. Additionally, students will be learning to tell the time to the minute, how to read timetables and counting forward and back in time. Students will investigate the connection between fractions and decimals whilst converting between both. They will continue to practice solving problems which include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Furthermore, students will be revising mathematics topics from throughout the year.
Science
In Science, students will be investigating waves in their many forms. They will be learning about how a light wave travels from the sun and strikes a solar panel on earth as well as how that light is converted into electricity. Students will learn about how waves transfer energy from one place to another and cause changes. They will describe and measure all the different types of waves, from sound to light to water. Students will also investigate bodily structures that allow for the detection of waves and how they function e.g. the eardrum and how it detects sound waves.
Humanities
In Humanities, students will be learning about World Rivers and Mountains. They will be using maps and globes to locate the continents, major oceans and well-known world rivers. Students will be exploring the benefits and dangers of rivers. They will learn to make connections to ancient civilizations and the reasons why they were established near rivers. Students will also learn about famous mountains and mountain ranges, for example: The Himalayas, The Alps and The Great Dividing Range. They will be making connections to how mountains are formed and will learn to identify the tallest mountains on each continent.
Circle Solutions
Sex Education Australia (S.E.A.) will be visiting Grade 4 at the start of the term. The programs are age-appropriate and cover not just anatomy, puberty and reproduction but also body safety (protective behaviours), respect, friendships and the risks of technology. In Respectful Relationships, students will be learning about Gender and Identity and Positive Gender Relations. This will be closely linked to subjects covered in SEA classes.
The students will learn about concepts such as resilience and fair vs equal. In addition to this, we will be using feedback collected from student surveys, in order for them to learn about emotional regulation and how to be safe on the internet. Finally, we will reflect on the successes and challenges of the year.
Passion Projects
The students have been enjoying their Passion Projects this year. These have included role-plays, video game creations, dioramas and more. The teachers will be giving the students an opportunity soon to voice their suggestions for their final Passion Project of the year. We can't wait to get started already!
