Grade 3

Explore the learning on Level 3, our rainforest floor...

In Term 4, Grade 3 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:

 

English

Students will learn about the science behind light and sound. They will read about light sources, shadows, mirrors, reflection, refraction, lenses, and colour. Students will also study the characteristics of sound and the human voice. They will plan, draft, and present their own newspaper article. Later in the term, students will learn about ‘The Viking Age’. They will explore who the Vikings were and why myths were important to them. Through a narrative text, students will learn about different characters and kingdoms within Norse mythology and demonstrate their understanding through writing activities. 

 

Mathematics 

Students will continue to practice the four operations, with a focus on multiplication and division. They will continue to explore the three strands of Mathematics. In Number and Algebra, students will focus on fractions and money. In Measurement and Geometry, they will learn about units of measurement, measuring angles and telling time. Finally, in Statistics and Probability, students will focus on collecting and displaying data and probability-related language. 

 

Science 

In Science, students will be learning about weather and climate. They will explore patterns of weather across time and location. They will also learn the difference between climate and weather. During the unit, they will explore the Earth’s atmosphere, the mixture of gases surrounding our planet. A major focus on will be on the role of water in the atmosphere and the importance of evaporation, condensation and participation. Finally, students will explore extreme weather and how engineers design solutions for extreme weather hazards. 

 

Humanities 

In Humanities, Grade 3 will begin by learning about the Maya, Aztec and Inca civilisations. They will explore the histories, power and achievements of each civilisation, as well as the factors that ended the reigns of these powerful groups. Later in the term, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of Vikings. Students will learn about the voyages of Eric the Red and his son, Leif Eriksson. They will be introduced to Norse mythology, including stories of Odin, Thor and Loki. Students will write and present an original myth to complete their learning about The Vikings. 

 

Circle Solutions and Respectful Relationships

Students will learn and practise strategies to regulate their emotions and solve conflicts. They will explore Topics 7 and 8 of the Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships curriculum: Gender and Identity and Positive Gender Relations. Finally, they will learn age-appropriate sexual education, facilitated by Sex Education Australia. 

 

Passion Projects 

Grade 3 students have loved exploring their Passion Projects this year. These have included sewing skills, volcano modelling, origami, cooking and more. Each term, students have been invited to share the topics they would like to explore as a class. Students have been excited to see their ideas come to life. Some popular topics so far have been; technology, modelling, animals, science, cooking and art. We can't wait to hear their suggestions for their last Passion Project of the year!
