Grade 2

Explore the learning on Level 2 and 3...

In Term 4, Grade 2 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:

English

This term is sure to be an exciting one as we engage in a term-long unit of Author Studies. Students will be immersed in a world of literature as they read selections of each author's books and then use each author's techniques in their own writing. The unit will cover a range of authors, including those from Australia and overseas, along with a mix of recent and classic authors.

Lessons will explore the ways that authors depict characters; looking for similarities and differences in books written by the same author. Students will be learning about the structure of two types of texts - persuasive and narrative writing - and apply their own writing to these structures. We are looking forward to meeting a number of authors through author visits.

Mathematics

Students will describe the features of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects. They will compare and order the area, volume and capacity of objects using informal units. Students will continue to explore everyday events that involve chance and complete chance activities. They will use chance vocabulary to describe the outcomes. Students will explore maps to familiar locations, such as the map of the school. They will identify the position of key features. They will continue to focus on solving questions involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Science

In this unit, students learn that matter, the “stuff” of which everything is made, exists in many forms. Students will practise sorting and grouping materials by characteristics called properties and investigate how the properties of different types of matter make them useful for different tasks. Students will be introduced to the practice of taking measurements, which permit simple comparisons. To help with their investigations, they will attend a hands-on science in-visit and an excursion to Scienceworks.

Humanities

In this unit, students will learn about key figures from Australia and around the world who fought for a cause and stood up for what they believed in. Some of the figures include Cathy Freeman, Banjo Patterson, Evonne Goolagong and Stephen Hawking. They will explore the connection between ideas and actions to see how people can do extraordinary things to change understanding and actions.

Circle Solutions

Students will explore the concepts of change and goals in Circle Solutions lessons. They will discuss how their body changes as they get older (e.g. teeth falling out) and list activities they can do to stay fit and healthy. Students will identify their personal strengths and describe how they are useful at school and home. They will learn and practise strategies to regulate their emotions and work in a team. Students will explore Topics 7 and 8 of the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum: Gender and Identity and Positive Gender Relations.

Passion Projects

The Grade 2's have been enjoying their Passion Projects this year. These have included sea creature art works, a variety show, cooking, paper mache and game creation. The teachers will be giving the students an opportunity soon to voice their suggestions for their final Passion Project of the year. We can't wait to get started already!
