In Term 4, Grade 1 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:
Phonics

The students will continue to explore alternative spellings of the phoneme. Students will also be learning to add prefixes and suffixes to root words and to accurately read and write these words.
English
In English for Term 4, students will be exploring fairy tales that have been favorites for generations. Students will learn about the elements of fairy tales that distinguish them as a unique type of fiction that still has the elements of character, plot, and setting that are found in other types of fiction. Students will read and respond to adapted versions of the traditional tales through a modern lens. Students will create their own digital fairy tales, practice and perform plays and recite poetry.
Mathematics

They will have hands-on learning experiences to measure and compare objects by using informal units. They will also practise following and giving directions and telling the time to half-hour. There will be learning experiences for students to strengthen their understanding and reasoning skills through solving worded problems in Maths.
Science
In Term 4, Grade 1 students will be learning about simple machines and how they operate. Students will identify simple machines including the ramp, wheel and axle, pulley, lever, wedge, screw and gears. Humanities
In Term 4, Grade 1 students will continue their learning about Mesopotamia, an ancient civilisation that developed in the land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Students will learn about agricultural methods and changes to work that were crucial to building what was one of the world’s oldest civilisations.
Circle Solutions
This Term, Grade 1 students will continue their exploration of social and emotional learning through topics including friendship, personal space and how to identify and regulate emotions. Students will also be exploring concepts of gender and identity through the implementation of the Respectful Relationships program.
Passion Projects
Students have loved engaging in our passion projects this year. So far, students have created their own clay animals and dioramas of habitats using recycled objects. Last term, students created space artworks using paint, pastels and glitter. This term, we will once again be asking students for their passions on what they want to learn and create. Stay tuned to see what they come up with!
