Careers Term Three Report

It has been another busy term in the careers and pathways department. The students have been given the opportunity to attend many workshops and career days.

In July, eighteen students were given the opportunity to attend a workshop at Northeast Health. To start the visit, they were given a tour of the hospital and met some of the staff in different areas of the wards. They were also shown some of the new extensions that are taking place.

The students were then given the opportunity to watch medical students participate in a simulation of an unwell patient in the emergency ward, this was an assessment that they (medical students) were being evaluated on. After this the students had the opportunity to meet the students and ask question about their journey.

The Year 9 students had their follow up interviews for their Morrisby Profiling, this took place over three days where students met with profilers via WebEx. The profilers ‘unpacked’ the results that the students had given. The profiling assists students with career and pathway planning, course selection at secondary school and post-secondary school education and options. All students in Year 9 are given the opportunity to participate in the Morrisby Career Profiling.

Senior students were given the opportunity to attend the NE Victorian Health Careers Forum held at CSU on Tone Rd. The day started with a simulation of a person who had been in an accident. The doctors and emergency staff went through the full process and explained what (and why) they were doing with the patient. The students then broke off into their workshops (each had four that they had chosen) and participated in hands on activities with qualified health career professionals. All students left the day with a clarity of the profession they wanted to pursue.

Senior students attended the annual Tertiary Information Session (TIS) day, held at CSU Tone Road. Students were able to meet with representatives from many universities and TAFE’s to gather information on courses on offer, life on campus and some guidance.

There have been many guest speakers who have given their time to come and speak to the students about careers, further studies, industry and past students to name a few. The presenters gave the students great information about their particular industry and pathway and how they got there.

You may have heard through the media about the Senior Secondary schooling pathway reforms, the changes are happening due to the recommendations of the Firth Review. The VCE VM will be replacing the VCAL and will be integrated into the VCE program. Student and families were given the opportunity to attend an information evening where the changes were explained and given the opportunity to ask questions.

I have started conversations with the Year 9 students to start thinking about Work Experience next year. They have been given information on opportunities already open in Melbourne e.g.: Zoo’s Victoria, National Gallery Victoria; some of these opportunities need to be looked into ASAP as they will be closing soon.

It’s never too early to start talking about carers.
