Year 7 Girls State Badminton Competition with Mrs Chambers and Mr Clark

On Tuesday the 13 September, a select group of Year 7 girls represented the school in the State Badminton Championship, held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center. The girls braved the cold and early morning start, leaving the school at 5am as one of the 8 schools to participate across the state. It was a competitive and fun filled day with all of the girls showcasing Wangaratta High School's talent. There were several close games in the singles with Isabelle Christison losing by the closest margin of 4 points. In the Doubles, we saw success, with Angela Keenan and Milly O'Kane taking home a great win. Although the girls did not get the result they wanted, the day was a success, highlighting the school's ability and drive to participate in competitive sport.

Gymnastics with Mrs Tara Hunter

7A have enjoyed learning basic gymnastic shapes and working on their core strength throughout the latest unit covered in Physical Education. Students have undertaken many gymnastic floor-based activities including musical shapes, v-sit tunnel ball, frog balances and animal walks. In the photo, we have students demonstrating both the angry cat and star shape to make a group formation, the human pyramid.

Year 10 Advanced PE – Netball SEPEP Unit with Mrs Tara Hunter

Recently the Year 10 Advanced PE class completed a four week Netball alternative curriculum model known as the Sport Education in Physical Education Program (SEPEP). The Netball SEPEP Unit was student ran and teacher facilitated therefore requiring all students to take on roles such as captain, coach, time keeper, scorer, board member, team manager, statician, umpire and photographer to ensure the success of the competition. At the conclusion of the ‘home and away season’ a nail biting Grand Final was played finishing in a draw which required over time resulting in a one point victory to Boxy’s Buddies who defeated Fluffy Unicorns. A ‘league’ vote count presentation occurred which saw Wil Carmody take out the prestigious award of the ‘Best & Fairest’. Throughout the unit there was much excitement with closely contested weekly games, the anticipation of MVP awards, terrific team camaraderie and excellent displays of sportsmanship. Well done to all of the students for approaching the unit with enthusiasm and committing to your roles of responsibility with a great sense of pride.

Upper Hume Athletics

41 of our top athletes took part in the Upper Hume Interschool Athletics Carnival last Thursday 9th September, at the Alexandria Park Athletics Complex in Albury.

The Weather Gods were up to no good in the lead-up, but for the first half of the day, it was just the cold the athletes had to battle. A number of our kids won events on both the track and in the field, securing their place at the next stage which will be the Hume Carnival in Week 1 of Term 4.

Year 9 Jack Ford was an early standout. Within the first hour or so, he had won all 4 of his events, despite coming into the day with a sore leg. An unbelievable effort from one of our great all-rounders.

The big moment of the day for our athletes was the 200m run of Year 12 Jack Boulton, a National Champion at multiple sprint distances, and the Australian record holder at 400m in the Under 15 age group. By this stage of the day, the bitter cold had been accompanied by rain, and as Jack hit the bend to enter the straight, it was raining that hard that people wondered if he would slip such was the pace he was travelling at. He won the race and at the same time set an all-time Upper Hume record. A phenomenal feat considering the weather.

The day was capped off in the final event of the day, which was the Under 18 boys relay. Our team of Jack Boulton, Vincent Chisholm, Jarrod Bell and Tom Solimo were too strong on won easily.

Thanks to all of our athletes for their tremendous participation, sportsmanship, and for their ability to maintain excellent behaviour and resilience in the extreme weather conditions.
