LOTE Assembly and LOTE Night 2022

Last week saw the LOTE Department celebrate languages other than English at St Philip's, with the LOTE Assembly taking place on Wednesday 19 October and LOTE Night on Thursday 20 October.

Students learning French and Japanese presented a variety of entertaining items at the assembly, ranging from the Year 9 French class singing the French National Anthem "La Marseillaise" through to senior Japanese students showing a humorous video they had created to remind students about school rules in Japanese.

Audience members had the opportunity to participate in an interactive quiz about French and Japanese culture, and test their knowledge on different Central Australian languages. Ms Rene Taylor also presented a short Arrernte lesson, with students trying out pronunciation of some important words.

Over the course of Terms 2 and 3 students in French and Japanese were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of NT and interstate competitions and the following students were presented with awards at the assembly:

The LOTE festivities continued on Thursday, with around 15 students from Years 7-11 coming along to learn how to make French madeleine cakes and authentic Japanese okonomiyaki (vegetable pancakes).  They were very privileged to have Mrs Harumi Matsueda and Mr Yuki Matsueda guide them in preparation of these. Afterwards, students moved over to the Fred McKay Auditorium where Mr Scott Fraser and Mr Salaam Al Marashli hosted a screening of "The Red Turtle", a French-Japanese co-production which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2017 Oscars. Viewers enjoyed the tale of a man who started a new life on a deserted island after being shipwrecked, which was told entirely without dialogue through images and music.

All students involved in the assembly and LOTE night are to be congratulated on their efforts, and encouraged to keep pursuing the fun and enrichment that comes from the study of Languages other than English.
