What a busy few weeks we have had in the Health & Physical Education Curriculum!
Curriculum Update
Foundation:
Over the past few weeks, the Foundation Students concluded their unit on dribbling and ball control and moved on to a two-week block of soccer. To conclude the basketball unit, the students learned and practise two different styles of passes (chest and bounce pass). To build confidence students worked with a partner and practised these passes from various distances. Once the students reach a level of comfort we combined both concepts of dribbling and passing into different activities.
Our soccer unit began with some simple drills to learn the importance of both touch and control with their feet. The students worked together to practise the Toe Stop, side to side control, passing and dribbling. It was fantastic to watch the student's development over the course of the lesson.
Year One/Two:
Over the past few weeks, the Level 1 Students concluded their unit on dribbling and ball control and moved on to a two-week block of soccer. To conclude the basketball unit, the students learned and practise two different styles of passes (chest and bounce pass). To build confidence students worked with a partner and practised these passes from various distances. Once the students reach a level of comfort they participated in some competitive games such as Popcorn and Dribbling Line tag which incorporated the learned skills.

The Level 2 students concluded Frisbee their unit involving throwing and Frisbee. They played a game of continuous Frisbee which incorporated all of the learned throwing and catching skills. It was great to see the students work so cooperatively and respectfully as a team.
To commence the student's unit on Dribbling, the focus was on exploring which hand they preferred to dribble a basketball with. We also played some games like Popcorn which focused on controlling the basketball while moving around the gym and Dribble Tag which focused on the change in direction while dribbling.
Year Three/Four:
Over the past few weeks, the Level 3 & 4 students concluded both their Frisbee and Netball units and also spent one lesson practising Badminton. The students finished their Frisbee unit with a match style game on a smaller scale field. The intention of this was to combine all of the learned skills and apply them to a team-based climate. To see the student's progression from the beginning of the unit to the last week was nothing short of amazing.
Upon completing our unit on Frisbee, we looked at the sport Netball. Our first lesson was all about practising the necessary skills involved in the game e.g. passing, movement and shooting. This was achieved through small team-based games such as Beat the Ball, Netty Numbers and sink the ship. Our second lesson provided students with the opportunity to apply all of these learned skill into a real match of netball. The most challenging aspect for the students was not moving their feet once in possession of the ball. As the game progressed, so did their learning and confidence.
During the Badminton lesson the students developed confidence hitting the shuttlecock back and forth with the partner. The students learning was then extended through a modified game of Badminton with lowered nets. This provided them with the opportunity to apply the learned skills in match simulation.
Year Five/Six:
Over the past few weeks, the Level 5 & 6 students concluded both their Frisbee and Netball units. The students also completed their health task for the term.

For the health task the students were tasked with describing their identity and listing aspects which make them unique. The purpose of this task was for them to establish how they are different to others and the importance of owning that. It was fantastic to see the responses students listed on their worksheets.
Inflatable Day:
What a great way to finish off week 10 with the Inflatable Sports Day. The students had a fantastic time participating in five different activities which included AFL, Netball, Cricket, Basketball and Soccer. These stations all had a focus on the Fundamental Movement skills with each offering up different challenges to the students. The students should be commended for the way they conducted themselves throughout the day. The level of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience on display was fantastic to see. To have comments come back from the external coaches about how well behaved our students were was great to hear.
