Find Your 30!!!

How do you find your 30 minutes of physical activity a day?

This is the challenge I am giving our students over the next month in PE at BPS and I hope this challenge can filter down to our families at BPS too! Now is as good a time than any to get some family exercise happening in your daily routine if you are not already doing it!

For me, it's a strength and conditioning workout, a run, a walk, playing backyard cricket and 1 on 1 basketball! I've just started back running after 12 weeks off after a knee injury and I'm loving the freedom of putting my runners on and getting out the door early in the morning. I find great joy in the challenge of pushing my body and getting my heart rate up, even when my body is crying out, "Stop". That post workout feeling is the absolute best! It's a personal victory and a positive well-being start to my day!

What movement do you love and how can you find the time to make it a priority in your life? Remember your health and well-being is just as important and as everyone around you. It's also a great role model for your kids and family when they see you valuing movement and activity.

Our buzz words in PE to help empower our students to monitor their activity and think about how their body is responding to exercise include, Heart rate, pulse, carotid artery, radial artery, breathing rate, recovery, breathing rate, cardio-vascular fitness and words to describe how they feel.

Our Grade 5 and 6's have been encouraged to find their heart rate pre and post exercise in PE, and noticing what happens to their pulse and breathing rates after a few minutes into their recovery. Knowing what you body is doing and also how it feels pre, during and post exercise helps our students value and understand the benefits of physical activity.

Family Physical Activity Fun

Here's some fun family activity suggestions that you could start including in your week to bond your family and get some great fun quality time together... walking, scootering, skateboarding, bike riding, kicking the footy, playing backyard or park cricket, family dance off, yoga, playing tennis, running, bush-walking, nature walk, beach activities like volleyball, frisbee, playing on the playground (adults too!), swimming, making a backyard obstacle course and playing tag.

I'd love to see some fun photos of families out enjoying being active together. If you have a family snap and give us full permission to post them in our newsletter, please send them to my email (merissa.pickford@education.vic.gov.au) and they may even make it onto the next Sports Shorts!
