DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT

Teaching Learning and Innovation

Welcome to Teaching and Learning 2021 at The Riverina Anglican College!

It was a truly exciting time to see students new and old start the year off in polished shoes, pressed shirts, with pristine books and bright eyed excitement. In particular, I would like to welcome our Year 7 cohort and our new Junior School students and staff. As someone who worked in a K-12 environment for over a decade, I am very much looking forward to all that being K-12 means; teaching, learning, wellbeing and the overall culture of our College are about to be transformed by this development in the life of our community. Again, welcome.

Teaching, learning and innovation began with a bang last week with an exciting series of sessions with Years 7-11 from Elevate Education. A combination of small and large group presentations saw the students challenged to manage their time effectively, consider how to deal with assessment task planning, develop skills in note taking, mind mapping, summarising and how to prepare for exams. We also had a staff meeting which focussed on Elevates key messages to the students and a range of follow-up support resources.

One of the most exciting aspects of last week for me was the remote parent session for Secondary School parents on Tuesday evening. A significant portion of the college community joined us online to hear the messages students had been provided with during the class sessions. I am a big believer in the parent/student/teacher relationship being at the core of learning success at our college, so thank you to those parents who attended.

Elevate Education will continue to provide guidance and support over the course of 2021. In regard to further parent information evenings, please keep an eye out on Compass and Facebook for details regarding the links to these upcoming online events:

  • February 10th - Motivation and the role of parental praise and goals.
  • February 24th - Time Management techniques to align the family expectations on homework and school-life balance.
  • March 10th - Technology devices and self-regulation strategies.
  • March 24th - Note taking skills to help your child deepen their revision.

I’ve already had many great chats with parents to kick off the school year. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning.

Yours in learning.
