Additional School Crossing

Additional School Crossing on Central Boulevard

Why is it happening?

Oberon High School has relocated just around the corner on Batten Road and will be operating from Term 1, 2021. This means that from next year there will be a lot more traffic on Central Boulevard, Batten Road and Eagle Bay Road. To help manage the traffic during school times, drivers travelling to either school will be encouraged to travel around the block, instead of performing U-Turns.

How did Council come to this decision?

• Engineer assessments against relevant Australian Standards, Supplements and Guidelines.

• Consultation and site visits with Principal Evan Savage and President Janelle Levy.

• Consultation with Regional Roads Victoria (previously called VicRoads).

• Coordination with Council’s Development, Infrastructure and Transport Engineers.

What is happening?

1. The existing Childrens Crossing is being converted into a supervised Wombat Crossing.

2. A second supervised Wombat crossing is being constructed in between the two off-street car parks, near the front of the school.

What are the benefits of the new crossing location?

• Easier and safer to park in the off street parking area when dropping off /picking up students.

• Pedestrians will be able to cross Central Boulevard directly from the off street parking area.

What are the benefits of a Wombat Crossing?

• Wombat Crossings are supervised during school times and provide right of way for pedestrians outside of school hours.

• Wombat crossings slow vehicle speeds between 5–8 km/h and reduce crashes by 63%

• Having two Wombat Crossings on Central Boulevard will slow vehicle speeds even further.

Will both crossings be supervised?

Yes, both crossings will be supervised from the first day of Term 2021.

When is it happening?

The construction will happen during the Term 4 school holidays 2020.
