In this edition of the newsletter, we are very excited to be able to share with you an overview of our learning, and promote an amazing artistic opportunity being presented by Belgrave Library. See further details below.

An Overview of our Learning

Foundation

Foundation students began the year developing line drawing skills by first drawing about themselves and where they live. This glimpse into their thoughts and imagination is an important milestone for students to encourage them all to participate and settle in to art room expectations. Students will then learn basic watercolour techniques to create a design that explores texture, line, shape and pattern.

Year One/Two

Year one and two students used their imaginations to design their dream backpack, working together to first mind map ideas on the board. They practiced precise colouring skills with pencils to complete creative, neat and colourful designs. Next week students will explore colour, pattern and symmetry to create a collaborative artwork for display inspired by the modern quilts of Maritza Soto.

Year Three/Four

Year three and four students jumped straight in to painting, creating a range of patterned papers, exploring textures and tools to create different marks. These papers will be used later in the year to create paper collages. Students will explore the element of line and how they can use it to make simple or complex patterns. We worked together to break down complex deigns into simple steps as well as coming up with some new designs unique to each individual.

Year Five/Six

Year five and six students began with drawing exercises to emphasise the ways we all interpret information differently and translate that into visual images in different ways. We enjoyed a good discussion about what was similar or different and why we made specific choices. Students will be focusing on the element of line to start the year, understanding how artists use line in different ways in their work and exploring how they can apply this to their own art.

Belgrave Library Art Opportunity for Primary School Students

Please refer to the flyer and details below if you would like to take part in helping to design the Belgrave Library:

Context:

The Belgrave Library is currently undergoing a refurbishment which will accommodate the changing role of libraries in our communities.

Yarra Ranges Council invites children aged 8-12 years to take part in the design process of a new artwork! Selected students will have the opportunity to work with an artist as well as young adults from the VCE Creative Showcase to help change the face of the Belgrave Library. All abilities welcome!

The creative work aims to celebrate the benefits that libraries bring to communities beyond books and to engage children and young people, particularly in the middle years (8-12), in the development of the work.

Yarra Ranges Council is a Child Safe Organisation and keeping young people safe is a priority. All participants and workers over 18 have Working With Children Checks.

The Opportunity:

Yarra Ranges Council’s Cultural Development and Youth Development teams are seeking six (6) primary school students from the Belgrave area and surrounds to be included in developing an artwork for Belgrave Library.

An artist, supported by Council and VCE Creative Showcase Alumni, will run the workshops in March 2021. Further details will be provided in late February.

What’s Involved:

The selected students will be involved in:

  • Workshops with the artist and young adults from VCE Creative Showcase
  • Meeting other young people from the area
  • Listening to other people’s ideas
  • Being creative, having fun and learning new things!
