Year 3
Reading
In term 4, the grade 3 teachers and students were so pleased to return back to face-to-face learning in the classroom. The students have shown such resilience this year and we are all so proud of all their efforts and hard work! In reading we have focused on Critiquing and Analysing when looking at an array of texts and authors. The students looked closely at how illustrations and descriptive language help us visualise and understand characters, settings and mode. The students did an author study on Anthony Brown and Rodney Clement. The students thoroughly enjoyed analysing various texts from both authors.
Writing
In writing, the students revisited narratives, focusing on their ability to enhance their skills as creative writers. The students worked hard on further developing their understanding of how language can be used to paint a picture in the readers the mind. In particular, our rocket writers have been practising their ability to use interesting adjectives and verbs to cleverly depict their characters and settings in their story. The students have successfully been able to complete the writing process of planning, drafting, editing and publishing their stories! The students have also explored persuasive advertisements, looking at how slogans, jingles and other techniques can be used in today’s social media. The students enjoyed creating their own item to persuade others to purchase.
Mathematics
In Maths, our learners have learnt about 3 Dimensional shapes and Capacity. We explored the various features of 3D shapes and how they can be created. We also looked at the ways in which we can measure and compare when learning about Capacity. We then learnt about Patterns and Algebra where our learners had the opportunity to look at number patterns and problem solving strategies. We continued on with looking at fractions and decimals and revisiting their Place Value Knowledge! The students have worked very hard to grow their number and measurement knowledge!
Inquiry
In term 4, we explored a unit called ‘Have your say’. Our learners have learnt a great deal about democracy and the purpose of our local government and the services it provides our community. The students have been given the opportunity to create rules and laws in the classroom to help them further understand why they are important and how it helps our community feel safe and organised. Our grade 3’s have explored how decision making is made withn our community, how they can be active participants in our community and how cultural diversity and belonging to various groups help shape our identity. We enjoyed creating our own local government within our classroom this term!
The Grade 3 teachers are so proud of our wonderful learners! They all continued their learning, despite a difficult year and made the most of their learning! We look forward to seeing their learning growth continue in 2021!
ART
It was fun and exciting to be back on site and finally working with the grade 3-4 Students in Art. The students enjoyed some fun activities which got their creative juices flowing. To start the term, the students worked on ‘Street Art’ writing styles, such as “Bubble writing” and tapped into areas that we had previously worked on, such as lines, colour, shape, shading and pattern to create a ‘Bubble writing masterpiece’. The students then explored the 3D Art element -‘Form’, and created small ‘Superhero’ figurines, using air dried clay. The students designed their character writing a short narrative about it, which included its superpower and key characteristics. The students have also been making crafty designs, such as cards and lanterns to take home for special people in their lives and to decorate their trees and houses. It was great to see the kids back at school creating art, after a challenging year for everyone. I wish everyone a fantastic break and a well earned rest.
LOTE- CHINESE
Well done everyone for a fantastic term and end to the year! During term 4, grade threes and fours reviewed topics and vocabulary, such and colours and family members, to reinforce their learning. They also expanded their knowledge with topics and phrases about sports and self-introductions. They learnt communication skills such as self-introductions and talking about their family members. They also learnt about a Chinese holiday called the Mid-Autumn Festival. Have a wonderful holiday!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
What a way to finish the year! This term, we started off with team building games to make sure we remembered to work together. We looked at skipping, going forwards and backwards and instead of netball, we focused on basketball and the skills that go along with it. We finished off the term with Bike Ed and learning how to balance when changing directions.
Rest up and we will see you next year!
SCIENCE
In Term 4, students have explored and developed their understanding of Chemical Science, particularly matter and its properties, focusing on solids, liquids and gases. Through fun and engaging experiments, students have investigated and observed how a change in temperature can affect the state of solids, liquids and gases, for example water changing to ice, or melting chocolate. They explored reversible and non-reversible matter by making playdoh and made Oobleck when we investigated non-Newtonian Fluids. We had a fantastic time conducting experiments to support the learning of Chemical Science.
