What’s New - From the Chaplain’s Desk

Here at MDHS we care about our students and are keen to see them thrive in all areas of their lives; academically, socially, and emotionally as well. As a Youthcare Chaplain here at MDHS my key focus is to support social and emotional wellbeing of our students and this happens in a number of ways.

BUZ values programs – To help our students develop the life skills they will need to face life's adversities we deliver BUZ (Build Up Zone) values programs. BUZ values programs are all about empowering children with important life skills. These skills will help them develop healthy relationships and social skills, resiliency skills, respect and ethical skills, emotional competence skills, and restorative practice skills.

BUZ is lots of fun and caters to all learners, using music, games and stories among other activities. There is also an opportunity for students to share their own experiences.

Breakfast Club - This year we have increased our Breakfast Club program to run Monday to Friday. Students can pop into the Home Economics room to grab something to eat after a long bus journey, a rushed morning or simply to come in and catch up with everyone before the school day begins. It is also an opportunity for staff to have a relaxed chat with students at the beginning of the day out of the classroom environment. Breakfast Club helps to build community and a sense of belonging within our school and is an integral part of our pastoral care of students.

Lunch Club – Held once a week, Lunch Club is an opportunity for students to have fun and interact with peers, including peers from different year levels, who have similar interests and passions. There are various activities on offer such as mindfulness activities, games, reading and BUZ activities to name a few.

Chaplaincy – Pastoral care is important here at MDHS and that’s why I’m here. There are Youthcare Chaplains in 625 schools across the state who support the social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of their students.

Here at MDHS I am available to touch base with students one on one or in groups. We can look at strategies that will help them manage their emotions, deal with “stuff” they may be struggling with, provide support in managing conflict issues they may have with peers or just be a listening ear. I also have great resources to share with students and parents alike that can be of help. We want to make sure that our kids are given the best possible opportunity to learn, grow and shine.
