Senior School Report

Revision Time

We are almost at the end of Term 3!  This has been a very full term for our Senior School students, with most of the content being taught for Units 2 & 4 subjects in this term.  Students should feel very proud of themselves for their hard work during this time.  Holidays are now a time to consolidate the learning done in Term 3, ready for Term 4 and exams.

Students completing a Unit 3 & 4 subjects are encouraged to attend the revision sessions during the first week of the September break to assist in their preparation for their final exams – a hardcopy timetable has been given to the students.  With a number of guest speakers, this will provide students with opportunities to refine their knowledge and skills.  Copies of the revision session timetable have been placed on Compass.  Students are also reminded that there are a number of sessions being conducted by the English and Maths associations over this holiday break.

English revision lectures (run by VATE – Victorian Association for the Teaching of English) – information available at: https://www.vate.org.au/srd/

Maths revision lectures (Specialist Maths, Math Methods, Further Maths; run by MAV – Mathematical Association of Victoria) – information available at: https://www.mav.vic.edu.au/student-activities/vce-revision-lectures.html

Valedictory Dinner (Friday 18 October) Reminder

Purchasing of Valedictory Dinner tickets will be available until 5pm on Monday 7 October.  We look forward to celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2019 with you.

Year 11

For our Year 11 students, the upcoming exam period will mirror the VCAA exams to best prepare the students for the rigours of Year 12.  They are encouraged to see these exams as an opportunity to trial their study habits and ability to recall a year’s worth of work.  Students experiencing difficulty are encouraged to seek the support of their teachers or of their coordinator.

Year 10

Year 10 exams will also be conducted and will cover the semester’s content.  Students are reminded of the need to study and prepare appropriately for these exams.

On behalf of the Senior School team, we wish all members of the Scoresby Secondary College community a safe and restful break!

DNA Technologies Excursion

As part of their Unit 4 course, students from the Year 12 Biology class were lucky enough to attend KIOSC – at Swinburne University – to explore tools and techniques for manipulating DNA.  In their session, students were taken through the science of DNA amplification (through Polymerase Chain Reaction, or ‘PCR’), gel electrophoresis technology, as well as exploring the therapeutic world of transforming plasmids, for use in the production of valuable resources such as insulin, for people effected by Type 1 Diabetes.  Students practised key scientific skills including analyzing, micropipetting, and measuring, whilst solving crimes involving DNA samples.  Another task involved looking at recombinant plasmids that glowed under UV light, having been transformed to include a gene from a luminescent jellyfish. The students will use this experience and knowledge as they complete their studies and prepare for their Biology exam, which is rapidly approaching on Friday 1 November.
