Habit 8: Find Your Voice – It’s All Happening in 2019!

It’s been another wonderful year where The Leader in Me has grown from strength to strength across so many areas of our School.  In our first year as a Lighthouse School, it has been a privilege to see just how the 7 Habits have positively impacted on the personal and interpersonal development of our students, parents and teachers. We must always remember that The Leader in Me is an inside out approach to personal growth, and everyone is on their unique path to reaching their potential. We need to keep believing in each other!

In particular when teaching young people, it is imperative to teach them that in order for them to reach their potential they must have a strong work ethic, be honest, contribute to their family and community, have faith, integrity and do the right thing when no one is watching.

Living in the 21st Century has many challenges and it is more important now than ever before to align with the principles behind living an effective life. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Habit 8: Find Your Voice, provides a framework and a common language where we can live fulfilling lives, and help others reach their potential too.

Authentic student voice is stronger than ever and is evident during Junior School Assemblies, on Open Days, running and organising Leadership Days and other key events. One of the highlights in Junior School in Term 4 is the Year 5 Graduation Ceremony. We were so proud see how our budding young leaders have matured, and are ready to face the new opportunities and challenges in Middle School. Mr Mark Robertson commented that it was arguably one of the best ceremonies to date, and we can attribute that to the leadership skills of both our teachers and students. Well done team!

As an added bonus and in support of Habit 8: Find Your Voice, FranklinCovey are sponsoring an exciting new initiative, where your child can receive up to US$1000. Our school holiday period is an ideal time to plan ahead for this competition with your children. The purpose of the leadership grant is to inspire and enable students to be life-ready leaders, and use the grant to make a difference within their circle of influence. Entry is via a video presentation. The decision regarding content is up to the student, but ideas might include: organising a service project, donating the money to a charitable contribution, or contributing to their school fund/improving the environment and so forth.

Further details regarding completion of consent forms and so forth will be emailed at the beginning of the 2019 academic year. All videos need to be approved by Oakleigh Grammar prior to submission. However, should you wish to begin preparations in assisting your child in their application, we have attached information in this issue of Grammar News below.

Wishing you a safe Christmas and New Year and looking forward to another exciting year with the Leader in Me in 2019.
