VET subjects

A focus for Career's Week
This week is National Careers week and Moama Anglican Grammar students have been exposed to a variety of different activities to expand their knowledge about different future career choices. VET (Vocational Education and Training) Courses, allow students to study a specific course where they gain a qualification and skills required for a specific job or career.
At Moama Anglican Grammar we offer two VET subjects, Primary Industries and Tourism, Travel and Events. These subjects are practical based and allow the student to gain both a Trade Certificate and credit towards their HSC, as well as developing them for the workforce.
The Tourism, Travel and Events and Primary Industries VET subjects are HSC subjects, which students study as an early commencement of the HSC program. They study these subjects in Years 10 and 11, and sit the HSC examination at the end of Year 11, as well as the relevant trade certificate.
Both of these VET courses are ATAR eligible.
In Tourism, Travel and Events students have the opportunity to attain a Certificate III in Tourism, and gain a variety of skills including:
- Customer service
- Selling
- Organisation
- Computer operation
- Event Management
- Teamwork
This qualification can help with any retail or hospitality position and also provides a pathway to work in many tourism industry sectors. This could include tour operators, visitor information centres, attractions, cultural and heritage sites and small tourism businesses requiring multi-skilled employees.
Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include:
- attraction or theme park attendant
- booking agent
- inbound tour coordinator
- operations consultant for a tour operator
- visitor information officer
- sales consultant
Primary Industries students have the opportunity to attain a Certificate II in Agriculture, and spend the majority of their time working and completing their learning on Moama Anglican Grammar’s farm to gain a variety of general farming skills including:
- caring for and handling of livestock
- fencing
- using and maintaining basic machinery
- participating in safe and sustainable work practices
- teamwork skills
- workplace communication skills
This qualification can help students in obtaining jobs, such as:
- Assistant animal attendant/stockperson
- Assistant Farm or Station hand
- Assistant Farm or Station worker
- Assistant Farm or Station labourer
Both the above VET courses require students to complete 70 hours of work placement, which helps the students to put their skills and knowledge into practice and experience some of the jobs they are interested in.
We also have students who are completing a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship, where they complete their Trade Certificate "on the job" at a workplace sponsoring the Apprentice or Trainee. These students spend time each week away from school on the job. These are individual opportunities where we work with the students to find particular career pathways they would like to follow. Currently we have a student completing a School Based Traineeship at the National Australia Bank, where he is working and completing his Certificate II in Business, and one at McDonald's Echuca completing a Certificate III in Retail.
