World of Maths

Our Junior School Prep to Year 5 students were engaged in a multitude of hands on problems solving tasks during their World of Maths sessions.  Vibrant and interactive mathematical games kept everyone enthralled as they negotiated, synergised and solved various activities.

Students in Prep to Year 2 were supported by our wonderful parent volunteers, who also enjoyed being a part of the action in this awesome learning experience.

The buzz around the room was delightful and a quote from Mason in 5MA sums up the experience perfectly. “It was the perfect amount of fun and challenge mixed together!”

Can I please take this opportunity to remind parents if they wish to volunteer to support any of our learning programmes, incursions or excursions, that a Working With Children’s check is required.  You can apply online at www.workingwithchild.vic.gov.au

Hatching Chicks with the Learner Profile in Prep

Communicators:

Chicken related words Greek and English By Prep

Bκότα – hen

πετεινός –  rooster

Caring:

Arushman PZ – You have to keep the chicks warm in the incubator until they are dry and fluffy. When they stand up on their own they can go into the pen with the others.

Ari F. PZ – You have to be careful with the baby chicks so they don’t get scared. You hold them gently with one hand on the bottom and one hand on the top.

Risk Takers:

Ellie PZ – At the start I was very worried about holding the chicks I didn’t want to do it. My teacher helped me by holding it and telling me to give it a pat. The next day I wasn’t so worried and I said ‘let go!’ to Miss Zurcas, and now I love holding the chicks.

Reflective:

Antonio PB – I saw the rooster in the Peter Rabbit movie. He said "cock-a-doodle-doo" loudly because he wanted his eggs to hatch. Our chicks say “cheep cheep cheep”.

Alegra PF – I want to take the chicks home at the end. I need to buy a house, food and water bowl before they come.

Open-minded:

Finley PF – the girl chicks only can go to houses, the boys need to go back to the farm.

Sienna PB – If you don’t eat meat you are vegetarian. Some people eat chicken.

Balanced:

Dimitri PB – The chicks need to come out of their pen to run around. They don’t have much room in their pen so I put one on the ground. They're fast.

Knowledgeable:

Ioannis PZ – I like the males, they are cute and yellow.

Sammy PB – Boys are light and the girls are brown. Boys will grow to be roosters.

Sienna PB – Girls will grow to hens and lay eggs.

Inquirers:

Siyaa PF – I wonder how chickens turn their food into eggs?

Baxter PF – I wonder how heavy a chick is? We used scales to find their numbers.

Thinkers:

Yianni PB – I love the chicks. When they are big they will be on a farm and lay eggs.

Siyaa PF – Chicks are fluffy so they can stay warm. I wonder when they will have feathers and fly with big wings?

Principled:

William PF – You need to look after chicks carefully. You need to be quiet, don’t squeeze them, sit down so you don’t drop them. If you drop them they can get hurt and need the vet, so you have to tell the teacher.
