Australian Science Fair

Australian Science Fair
WOW! We did it! 3 days full of activities, interstate guests, workshops, meetings and an evening Science Fair.
Big congratulations to all staff and students involved in the event . Special thanks to Dr Denney, Ms Bui and Ms Bay for all of their hard work and extra hours they put in to make the event such a success.
Here are some reflections from our JMSS students
Maya Bakin:
Overall, The Australian Science Fair has allowed for us to create long lasting friendships with students from all different backgrounds in science. Through immersing ourselves in an environment filled with like-minded people, it was easy to express our love and interest for science and share the discoveries we made throughout the EEI process. Furthermore, the various experiences were valuable and built upon our teamwork and communication skills.
Stephanie Lee:
This year I took part in the Australian Science Fair as a JMSS delegate for the regional and interstate guests, I am extremely confident to say that this experience was one of the most exciting of my time so far at JMSS. We took part in the ASF like all of the year 10 cohort but we also stayed at Mannix College with the guests. We did many fun activities at school together such as the engineering challenge and the amazing race. The stay at Mannix College was a time for all of us to get to know one another better and create lasting bonds (the food was good too!). I am extremely grateful that I had the opportunity to be a JMSS delegate in the ASF, and thankful for the many new friendships that I have made during this time.
Rahul Chitra:
Our experience as being delegates for the Australian Science Fair was a very enjoyable and memorable experience. It gave us an insight into various other projects completed by our interstate visitors and taught us beyond the scope of the normal classroom. In addition, presenting and talking to monash academics gave us valuable feedback on what we can improve on our EEIs and expanded our knowledge into the pathways of science. This was built upon in the STEM and house challenges which motivated us as little scientists to think creatively and outside the box. Effective team work with our visitors really bolstered our interest in STEM subjects and broadened our knowledge of engineering. Finally, Monash University workshops provided an insight into different sciences, giving the interstate guests new pathway ideas into STEM in Victoria.
Layla Carmeli-Wolski:
On the 25th of November, our large cohort took part in the annual Australian Science Fair, right here at our own school. Six of us were lucky enough to stay overnight at Mannix College with our many interstate visitors. Not only did we collaborate and learn about different fields of STEM and a variety of many interesting topics, but also about each other and created strong friendships while doing so. We were surrounded by like-minded people who are interested in the sciences and in learning. At the ASF, we were exposed to so many new and interesting concepts, through our personal projects, workshops at Monash University, group activities such as the STEM and house challenge and so forth.Overall, a great and exciting experience, which left us all feeling a part of a large network of strong-willed interesting students.
Lachlan O’Brien:
During the Australian Science Fair, six of us stayed on campus overnight with visiting students from across Australia. During that time, we were immersed in everything the science fair had to offer. By presenting our projects, we were able to practice communicating our ideas effectively and learn from valuable feedback from university academics. We also participated in hands-on workshops at Monash, gaining insight into their work in geology, biology, and engineering. The three days gave us all a great opportunity to meet people who share our passion for science and to learn about the diverse experiences of students from across Australia. The science fair really was a fantastic experience and we are all grateful to have been able to attend.
