Year 7s have the Last Word

My first term at secondary school

by Kayla Quinn

This term has been a new experience for me, as I came from a strict Catholic school in Canberra, which discouraged extension and individuality and viewed the students as a whole. Preshil couldn’t be more different. Here, each student is recognised as an individual person and treated as such. Teachers recognise each student’s unique learning style and encourage them to do their best, not to be  the best.

At first, I found the prospect of a free-clothes, individual learning style school quite daunting. However, as I have gotten to know everyone I have found that this school is welcoming and supportive. Preshil has an amazing community who is always happy to assist students with their learning endeavours.

My first term at Preshil has been a positive experience. I have made new friends, learnt new concepts and experienced what it’s like to be an individual person with a unique personality. I have enjoyed my first term, and I look forward to continuing on here in the near future.

The first term of high school has all round been extremely positive. Preshil has done a great job of welcoming the new students in 2019 and making them feel at home. The students at Preshil have shown incredible hospitality to those coming to a new school, and I’ve already made some great friends.

I look forward to every single class because the teachers do such a good job in making sure their lessons are enjoyable and educational. My chosen elective, Theatre Sports, so far has been extremely fun. Being able to choose an elective has been a new experience for me. I think that Preshil, having electives for the younger years of the school, is awesome.

At Preshil students are allowed to enter the classrooms during fruit and lunch which, coming from a school where you couldn’t, is really good. I enjoy occasionally going to the music room, jamming out on the piano and playing the guitars, etc. I think that this is a prime example of how this school is unique.

One of my favourite highlights of this term was camp. The trip to Canberra was incredibly enriching, especially going to Parliament House and watching a bill get passed in the House of Representatives. The visit to Telstra Tower was also very impressive; it had a breathtaking view of the city and a beautiful sunset. The school did a great job of organising it. Every part of going to Canberra was immensely fun, apart from the food.

Overall, my first term at Preshil has been amazing. I have learned so much already, and I can’t wait to learn more.
