Netball

It has been a great start to the summer netball season with great numbers giving us a team in each age group; the under 13s, 15s and 18s.

With four rounds down, our Under 13s have come away with two convincing wins and two losses. This team has an abundance of numbers giving the room to move players around and all players have shown a great team spirit, trying hard no matter what position they are placed in.

The Under 15s and 18s competitions have been combined because of the lack of teams in the 18s division. This has made it hard for our Under 15 team to gain a win so far. The Under 18s have had two wins, a loss and a bye.

I’d like to especially mention Olivia Anagnostou who hasn’t been able to play due to injury; however, she has put her hand up to continue umpiring, which has shown great dedication to the sport.

Also, thanks to all those others who have put their hand up to umpire (Tayla Kennedy, Amy Waters, plus past players/students Annabelle Millear and Sophie Delahoy) and the parent helpers who have been managing teams. It is great to have so many supporters on the sidelines each week encouraging our teams.

There will be short finals for all grades at the end of the season, so we are hoping to see our teams representing our school.

Under 14 Cricket Report - Round 5

Round Five was played at Myrniong against St. Andrew’s. After losing the toss College was sent into bat. Charlie Johnston (23 runs) and Oli Wortley (49 runs) put together another excellent opening partnership of 84 runs. This is the third time in four games that these two have batted past the half century mark. Next in were Henry Bensch (30 runs) and Eliza Jagger (22 runs not out). These two put on an entertaining 46 run partnership, with Henry being the aggressor, smashing five boundaries before picking out the fielder at square leg. Dougal Doery (19 runs), Edward Beggs (13 runs) and Jason Hawker (9 runs) not to be outdone, made quick and valuable runs before retiring to give the rest of the team time at the crease. At the end of 48 overs College had amassed a mammoth total of 231 runs.

Returning the following week to bowl, College was full of confidence that their runs on the board had tipped the game to their favour; however, there were still ten wickets to get. The ground was wet, which quickly soaked the ball, making bowling difficult. Understandably the line of the College bowlers was a little off, but when they got the line right the wickets tumbled. Six of the St. Andrew’s dismissals were bowled and three further had the batsmen trapped in front of their stumps. Dougal Mann, who is having a ‘purple patch’ with the ball, picked up two wickets in his first over and he along with Campbell Craig (2 wickets for 4 runs) destroyed the top order. St. Andrew’s never recovered, being dismissed for 62 runs. Charlie Johnston also picked up two wickets, with the rest of the wickets being shared amongst the College team. A special mention must go to Finley McLindin, who took his first wicket for College. He has been desperately unlucky not to have picked up a couple of wickets from earlier attempts.

Racquet Sports -Table Tennis and Tennis

This year was the first year in at least ten years that tennis and table tennis have been on offer at The College. We have up to nine players playing table tennis on a Thursday night in the Hamilton Table Tennis Association over two seasons in 2017. In the autumn season, students were in two teams, solely as Hamilton College. In the Spring season, The College players were broken into teams of mixed ability. This week will be the last round for the season. We will have several players going into finals. All students have developed their play to an impressive standard. We look forward to seeing bigger and better things with the players next year.

Tennis

We have had a mixed team play tennis at the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club on a Wednesday night. They have had a lot of fun with mixed success. We hope to be putting a men’s team into the competition next term. If there is new interest in playing next year, I request that I be emailed, before holidays start, as play starts on the first week of term.

Tennis Coaching

Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club have been actively seeking the services of a coach for tennis. They have recently appointed a new head coach, Mr Grant O’Callaghan, for the coming year. Grant is a Tennis Australia Club Coach from Gippsland and intends to be staying in Hamilton Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. He is keen to offer coaching to any of our students before school, at lunch time and after school if it does not clash with his commitments at the Lawn Tennis Club. He can be contacted on 0417 528 502. Grant is also offering a School Holiday Program in January and other sessions tennis session. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
