Music at Home

As musicians and music performance everywhere faces the threat of being silenced in this changed world, music at Preshil thrives. Virtual instrumental lessons have begun and children, with increased time to practise, are experiencing greater progress and accomplishment. Ensembles continue to bond our students through virtual chats and the aim to digitally create music together. The community is constantly being connected by the Preshil music Instagram page which provides a performance platform, inspiration and just a bit of fun!

At Preshil, we believe music encourages learning through doing. Whether your children are inventing their own rhythms, learning to sing a new song, writing lyrics, dancing or practising instrumental music, we know they are developing confidence, experiencing pride in making choices and are feeling the joy of achievement.

We are thrilled to be starting a new term of music learning at Preshil and doubly excited that parents have the opportunity to watch and listen as your children explore music through play. The Kinder, the Lighthouse, Loft Room and Sunroom students are making their own instruments. Already, they have created amazing noise-makers from materials found at home. We have seen inventive designs, beautiful decorations and, most importantly, keen musicianship on home-made shakers, rainmakers, tambourines, kazoos, balloon and paper skin drums, guitars, violins and amalgamations of these as well! To add to our joy, we are seeing families playing music together on these wonderful home-made instruments!

Meanwhile, the Peppercorns are developing their compositional skills on Soundtrap, an online digital audio workstation that enables peers to create songs collaboratively and share in the joy of making music together.

The Peppercorns will be producing their own ‘home song’ audio recordings using sounds created around or inside the home – this might include recording a squeak in a floorboard, footsteps, the clanging of saucepans or flicking on a light switch... we can’t wait to hear what they will come up with!

Students will continue to explore instruments from around the world and investigate where these come from, the materials they are made of, how they are played and what they sound like and will have the opportunity to make comparisons to instruments that are common to them.

We hope that music continues to provide our community with inspiration, a sense of connection and joy.
