What a fabulous week FOMAD was!

This year the annual Art & Design Exhibition was set up in our new F Block rooms and looked so impressive! Artwork was scattered across tables, filled many rooms and scaled the walls, transforming the area into a professional exhibition space.

The gallery showcased many projects students have been busy creating throughout 2019. All year levels were on display across disciplines of Art, Visual Communication and Design (VCD), Digital Design, Media, as well as Product Design in Wood and Textiles. The year 7 grey-lead portraits and symbolic totem sculptures are always a crowd pleaser. The year 8 embossed mirrors shone in the sunlight, highlighting their indicate patterns. People admired the Textile folios and products, some of whom fantasied over taking a tote bag or PVC wallet home! The VCD room had some great examples of final products, such as 3D architecture, computer cases, and mobile phone covers. Woodwork products varied in function and size, the craftsmanship was closely admired and praised. Studio Arts took over two rooms which housed an impressive combination of sculpture, printmaking, drawing, painting, installation art and ceramics. Including a live painting exhibit by Isabella Munoz from year 11 Studio Art. We even had a theatre set up for viewing our Media work with the screening list showcasing a glimpse of the amazing work students produced across years 9-12.

The opening night was accompanied with music by a few of the BSC musicians and teacher Michael Kean. As well as a bar with culinary delights thanks to the ladies from the Parent’s Association, which added some class and authenticity to this event.

We have a few awards this year; the RMIT sculpture award, the People’s Choice award (1st and 2nd place), and the FOMAD competition (separate teacher and student categories). Fleur Summers – the head of the sculpture department at RMIT – selected Olivia Dupe’s installation to receive the sculpture award. People commented on the high quality of work, which made this year’s People’s Choice Award a close tally! Our FOMAD competition entries were splendid too and have made it hard to select a winner! Come along to the end of year assembly to see who won each competition.

Many thanks to all the teachers and students who have helped, supported, designed, or worked towards this event. It is such a wonderful way to celebrate all the hard work both staff and students create at BSC!

As part of the Festival of Media, Art and Design, the Arts Faculty was proud to once again present this year’s BSC Film Fest for 2019 at the Nova Cinema in Carlton. The evening was nearly a sell-out and it was great to have so many students, families and staff present to support the festival at this busy time of year.

This year, the quality and quantity of work produced across VCE Media enabled the entire program to be filled solely with Year 11 and 12 work. The 19 films in the program showcased and celebrated a variety of styles and genres and, most importantly, an increased sophistication in technical skill and storytelling ability from our senior Media students. It’s fantastic for students to be able to see their media products be distributed in such an authentic environment and for them to have an audience react to their work.  It was amazing to hear the responses of the audience as we watched all the films on the big screen.

For the fifth year running we premiered the Media Co-Curricula Program’s short film production, Freeze Frame. This was the product of a year-long project, created by and for the students, led by Media Representative Evexia Hatfield. It is the culmination of many hours of hard work and dedication and this action-comedy did not disappoint.

For those who missed the Film Festival,  there was also an opportunity to see some more Media student content run as part of  the Art & Design Exhibition.

Congratulations and thank you to the students, staff and families who came to support the arts at Brunswick Secondary college.

As both a teacher and a parent at the school, I thoroughly enjoyed FOMAD this year. The Film Festival was a wonderful showcase of students’ creativity and skill in film-making. Some of the films involved senior students whom I teach and it is great to see the talents of those students in other curriculum areas. The Art and Design exhibition reflects the range of opportunities that students have in the visual arts and technology and is one of my family’s favourite community events at BSC. Congratulations to all involved.

I always look forward to FOMAD week, it’s a great way for teachers to discover the talents of students in a way that we wouldn’t ordinarily see in our own classes. The artwork showcased represents a diverse range of skills, and I am always in awe at how students have effectively and creatively  managed such  long-term projects.

The Film Festival is also a highlight for my family, and we always leave the event reminded that  we have a wonderfully diverse and talented group of art and design students among us at BSC. Bravo!
