message from the principal

Class of 2019

Karen Harris

Principal

It is a pleasure to commence the final newsletter of the year with congratulations to all Year 12 students and to commend them on the attainment of their VCAL or VCE Certificates. We wish them all well for 2020 and beyond; the majority of students have achieved results which will enable them to access their desired course or work placement in 2020.

Brunswick Secondary College community looks forward to a continuing  relationship with these alumni by inviting them back to future school events.

VCE Results

It is a further pleasure to  congratulate our VCE students on their VCE results.    125 students completed VCAA examinations and received an ATAR score.

We congratulate the school Dux, Michael Rasip, on his outstanding score of 98.85.

Forty percent of  students obtained an ATAR above 70 which is testament to their solid work throughout the year.  Some of our Year 11 students completing an Early Start VCE subject also received very high study scores above 40.  This sets them up for a very successful final year in 2020.

Awards Night

Our annual Awards Night was held this month in the school Theatre.  This event provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of students in Years 7 to 11.  Read about this event in this edition of the Brunswick Star.

FOMAD

Festival of Media, Art & Design

As you will see in this edition of the Brunswick Star,  BSC FOMAD was again a treat to all who participated and attended the events.

Beginning with the BSC Film Festival - screened at Cinema Nova in Carlton - and ending with the BSC Art & Design Exhibition on display a the college, there was a feast of Arts entertainment on hand in one of the busiest weeks of our year.

It is a tribute to considerable student talent and teacher commitment that these events remain some of the most popular events on the school calendar. Ever-surprising and always entertaining,  FOMAD is a must-see event every year!

Parent Association

Our hard-working and dedicated Parent Association has enjoyed its most successful year to date,  with members running a number of significant events to support the school.

Secondhand Uniform Sales and participation in the Twilight Market may be the backbone of the associations calendar,  but this year's PA Trivia Night was a triumph. Not only did the event generate significant funds to be used to improve school facilities for all students,  it proved to be a fabulous social occasion, forging and strengthening community links at the college.

This year,  thanks to the Parent Association, the school has been able to purchase much needed reverse-cycle airconditioning units to a number of classrooms as well as forwasrd -planning upgrade and replacement of some of our outdoor furniture. early in the new year.

The entire school community takes this chance to extend  thanks the members of the Parent Association for their sincere commitment and the enormous effort they have expended in providing  such valuable support to the school.

2019

2019 has been a successful year with Brunswick Secondary College students again involving themselves fully in the rich co-curricular program on offer and committing themselves to their studies.    We finished the year on a high note with the very successful China Tour and we thank  Wanling Zhong (Teacher - Chinese) for leading the tour. Reports of the China Tour were very positive, as is often the case when our students are out in the wider community.

This year we say goodbye to our School Council President, Rosa Lorenzon,  and to Con Lekakis (a long-serving councillor) as their association with BSC comes to an end.  We take this opportunity to thank Rosa and Con for their generous and highly-valued contribution to the school over past years.  Both Con and Rosa have provided a wealth of skill, experience, knowledge and sage advice in their service to the  school , and they will be sadly missed.

2020

We are looking forward to 2020 - another busy and exciting year for our school.

The first day for students in 2020 is Thursday 30 January.  It is suggested students and families check Compass and school emails in the weeks prior to commencing school for updates on timetables and organisational matters for Day 1.

We have developed the Brunswick Secondary College Mobile Phone Policy and  it comes into effect at the beginning of 2020. Full details will be posted on Newsfeed to families and students and the policy is  also included in this newsletter for your reference.

Parents are encouraged to read this policy and actively discuss the content with your child/ren, to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of the mandated regulations.

In summary, the school is implementing the Ministerial Order that mobile phones are not be used during the school day, including recess and lunchtime unless there are approved exceptions. Students will be required to keep phones in their lockers during the school day.

Thank you

Finally, I extend a thank you to the students, staff  and parents of Brunswick Secondary College for their support in 2019.

The Principal Team, Teaching staff, Wellbeing team and Education Support staff at Brunswick Secondary College wish all of our students and families a happy, restful and safe holiday break.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2020!
