Presentations/workshops across July/August:

Providing our students with guest speakers, presentations and workshops is a valuable component of our wellbeing program. The information students receive during these interactions is vital to them building a wellbeing toolbox that gives them diversity in the strategies they can use to manage their emotions. Students also learn to develop their listening and critical thinking skills and the ability to show respect to the visitors that take the time to share their knowledge and experiences with our young people. Our students are then better placed to thrive and flourish, giving them every opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Year 7:

Toolbox Education facilitated a workshop on 24th July during pastoral care on Emotion Regulation. It is based on dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) which is a type of cognitive behaviour therapy or talking therapy. The workshop is about letting air out before we burst. The students spoke about what a trigger might be and learnt a set of tools to help them de-escalate conflict, let emotions out in a healthy way, and lower the intensity of situations. The overall feedback from students was that they really enjoyed the workshop and found the information and tips really useful.

Year 9:

A short survey on the power of nutrition was sent to students to complete on Monday 7th August during pastoral care to obtain data on how many are eating breakfast, where they eat it (home, school, car, bus etc) and what they are eating. This gives us a snapshot of whether they are fueling their brains first thing in the morning and what they are fueling it with.

This was followed up with a Power of Nutrition presentation from Teri Lichtenstein, Nutritionist with Felstead Education on Monday 14th August who spoke to the students about brain food, how it affects their brain and in turn, their academic performance. The students did a critical thinking activity on evaluating the ingredient lists on food packaging to determine whether something was representative of what it was advertising. eg. Helga’s Spinach and Herb wraps only contain 1% spinach.

The Year 9’s were also provided with a healthy snack donated by The Happy Snack Company.

The students were outstanding during the presentation showing great respect to Teri and engaging well with the presentation. They are to be commended on their behaviour.

Year 10:

We Are Gibber presented Smashed, a live theatre performance on the dangers of underage drinking on Wednesday 16th August.

As stated on their website Smashed provides hard-hitting interactive education that empowers students to behave responsibly and make informed choices.

Students observed the experiences of three credible teenage characters, exploring and reflecting on vital underage drinking themes including; relationships, consent, health, safety and career aspirations. By interacting with the characters the students are challenged to think, what if that was me? Offering advice, discovering realistic ways to deal with peer pressure and where to get further support.

It was a brilliant, interactive performance and the students really enjoyed it. They were invested in the show, answering questions and suggesting ways that the ‘characters’ could have made better choices.

Universal Magazine Committee

Are you a budding graphic designer, illustrator, photographer, editor or writer?

The Universal Magazine Committee is a place where you can build your skills and get valuable training and hands-on experience.

Work with like-minded people to create a free and vibrant quarterly youth magazine.

To join, you must be:

– Between the ages of 12 and 25

– Connected to the City of Kingston (live, work, study)

– Commit to attending the monthly meetings; and

– Complete a Participation Form

Women's Youth Leadership Program

Kingston Youth Services is partnering with the Hawks Community Foundation to provide a Women's Youth Leadership Program. The program will be in the student's own time as it’s being delivered outside of school hours.

Commencing in September and over 10 consecutive weeks they aim to deliver a targeted program to Year 9/10 students (or equivalent) to provide resilience education and training and connect young people to leaders and the community. With their key partners they will get a greater connection to the WAFL league and meet with inspirational leaders so young people can explore the issues and topics they are passionate about.

The Women’s Youth Leadership program is not always about those in a leadership capacity it’s targeted at anyone seeking self-improvement and trying something new.
