Introducing our 2024 School Captains

It is with great please that we introduce our School Captains and Vice Captains for 2024.

A big thankyou to all the students who put themselves forward for these positions. With so many high quality applicants, it was not an easy decision.

We wish our captains all the best in their positions next year.

House Chess Competition

This term so far, students had the opportunity to represent their houses in our house chess competition.

A very well done to Rothwell for winning this competition, and for all the other houses for doing so well and upholding great sportsmanship. It was amazing to see how dedicated students were to representing their houses, and to witness the performance of our younger up and coming chess players.

Largely, many of these players were from the Chess Club, and were another example of commitment and leadership in the SCHS community. We have very talented chess players here at Cory, and we encourage students to stay tuned for upcoming house competitions this term, such as house debating!

Year 9/10 Basketball Fundraiser and Pancake Parlour Raffle

The Year 9 and 10 SRCs planned the Basketball Fundraiser for Year 9s and 10s this term to see which team would win the competition. We had 30 participants and were going into the double elimination style tournament with 6 teams.

During Term 3 Week 1, we had our lead up games out on the basketball courts for teams to knock each other out for a spot in the finals. On Wednesday, Team 1 and 6 dominated, winning both their games. On Thursday, Team 2 won both their games and Team 4 won their single game too. Friday was the day of the semi-finals and after two close matches, Teams 1 and 6 made it through to the finals.

The grand final of the Basketball Fundraiser took place on Thursday July 27th in a heated match between the two teams. We had many supporters on the day to watch the game as well as the Pancake Parlour Raffle on the sidelines. It was a tough match but ultimately, there had to be one winner which was Team 6 (who remained undefeated throughout the tournament)! Big congratulations to Angelo Benjamin, Rishit Srinivas, Emmanuel Joice, Haris Mohamed Umar and Bavacharan (BC) GV who took home the Cadbury hamper as the grand prize.

The first place winner for the Pancake Parlour Raffle was Samuel Brooker who won a Pancake Parlour tote bag with complimentary pancake ingredients as well as free short stack vouchers. A big thank you for all the teachers and students involved in the event - it wouldn’t have been possible without your help. All funds raised for the fundraiser and raffle were donated to Save the Children - the charity chosen by Team 6.

Premier's Spirit of Anzac writing prize

Entries for the 2023 Premier's Spirit of Anzac Prize (SOAP) are open now, until 5pm on Weds 6 September. One of our amazing student writers won an award through this prize a couple of years ago - it's definitely worth having a go if this is an area of interest for you.

The Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize is an annual competition open to students enrolled in years 9 to 12. It offers Victorian students the opportunity to explore Australia’s significant war and peacekeeping history.

In 2023, the Prize focuses on the significant ties between Australia and Türkiye as part of Victoria's celebration of Türkiye's Centenary of Independence.

10 winners will participate in an all-expenses-paid international study tour to Türkiye, retracing the experience of Australian men and women at war on the Gallipoli Peninsula and learning about the making of the Anzac legend.

Entries close 5 pm Wednesday 6 September.

To read the eligibility criteria and learn more about the prize, visit Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize.

Students can come and see me - or talk to their English teacher - if they would like some support with this.

Freaky Friday

This year's production of Disney's Freaky Friday was an absolute triumph. Months of hard work and long hours by the cast, crew and musicians ensured that this years musical production was a resounding success.

A mattinee performance to students from a number of primary and P to 9 students on te Wednesday was the perfect launch to amazing week of performance over 3 nights.

The audience response was astounding, with many commenting it was the best school production they had ever seen.

Of course, we must not forget the many hours of hard work by the Production team, for without their dedication and commitment the production would not have been the success it was.
