Saltwater Boy
By Bradley Christmas
Recommendation by Oakley Pendlebury, Year 9
"Saltwater Boy is about a young gentleman, Matthew, who has a dad in jail. When Matthew’s dad suddenly gets out of jail, he causes trouble and complicates the relationships Matthew has with other people in his life. Matthew is already finding it hard, adjusting to a new place, away from his best friend, but he is lucky that he has formed a connection with Bill who has become a positive role model in his life.
I enjoyed this novel because I could identify with Matthew. I, myself had to move from my home town, Bacchus Marsh, and like Matthew, I miss my best friend. The novel taught me that it is possible to have positive relationships with people who are not family and anybody can learn how to do new things such as how to draw and how to write an essay.
I think this book would be enjoyed by many people, especially people who have parent issues and may have important people in their life who are acting as role models. "
