Sustainability newsletter
On Wednesday the 12th, some year 4 and 5 students went to St Kilda Beach for a Sustainability excursion. Cecile and Alex had spent 8 weeks with us at school teaching us about what and how we can make a difference to our school environment. They explained what recycling is and what rubbish should go into which bins. We also learned that over the past 3 years we have thrown 3 billion pieces of rubbish on the ground that ended up in the storm water leading to Port Phillip Bay. Some items take many years to break down. A shoe takes 10 - 12 years to break down and a banana peel takes 4 weeks. This is because a shoe is man made and a banana is natural. We learnt that microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that have been made in factories and are extremely difficult to find/ see with the naked eye. Going forward we are going to address litter in the yard and encourage Nude Food regulations.

We were really excited to see so many changes happening in the Bay to support and take care of the dolphins and penguins. The pier is undergoing a huge reconstruction so it's more eco friendly for the penguins and Bay wildlife. They are also making a sitting area so people that go to the pier can see the penguins.
